Symptoms of Miscarriage

On this page you will find four categories of miscarriage symptoms: definite signs of a forthcoming miscarriage, possible signs, signs that might scare you but are really okay, and unusual periods that are not miscarriages.

Definite Signs of a Miscarriage

You are having a miscarriage if you have already had a positive pregnancy test, then get these symptoms:

  • Heavy bleeding that soaks a pad in a few hours or less.
  • Strong cramps that make you double over or breathe in a huffy way. Bleeding will usually follow quickly.
  • Passage of tissue, resembling large thick blood clots in the earliest weeks up to pinkish/grayish material, with or without cramps or pain.

A little bit of bleeding without cramping should be okay, but call a doctor. Small darting cramps, even if they hurt, are also okay, usually they just signal the body stretching and pulling to accommodate the growing baby. Lie down and the cramps will usually go away within the hour.

These symptoms can be other things rather than a loss of pregnancy, however, if you are not sure you are pregnant. Check the “I’m not sure I was pregnant” section.

What should you do?

If it is during doctor’s regular working hours, call your regular doctor first. They will give you instructions. If it a night or weekend, first call your regular doctor’s after-hours number. Usually this will be on their answering machine or with their answering service. The nurse or doctor on call who calls you back will help you decide if you need immediate attention or not. Don’t feel like you are bothering them needlessly; this is a natural and expected part of any OB practice. If you can’t get through, don’t have a doctor, and you are afraid, then go to an emergency room.

Be prepared for some possibly insensitive treatment. While some hospitals are well equipped for handling this situation and do a good job, often you are left alone in a room for hours, or told to sit on a toilet and catch tissue, or just sent back home because “there is nothing they can do.” It may be worth the trip, though, if they draw blood for an hCG test or give you a sonogram.

When I began bleeding heavily on an airplane on a Friday afternoon, I still waited until Monday to see my doctor. I did not want some total stranger telling me the baby had died, or to have a sonogram in an emergency room and be told to “call my doctor for the results.” While I was sad about the possible loss of the pregnancy (turns out I lost one of a set of twins at 10 weeks), I was resolved to wait for a comforting, familiar doctor’s office.

There is not really a risk to waiting until Monday or the next morning if you are in your first trimester. There is no magic way to stop an early miscarriage at the hospital. What is going to happen will happen. If you are farther along than 12 weeks, though, and you are merely in labor and not bleeding, then you should take quick action to see if labor can be stopped. If you are passing tissue at home, and it is your first miscarriage, it is not necessary to catch the tissue and take it in. You may do this if you choose, however, and you can store it in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator until you get to a doctor. However, it is rare that tissue caught this way will be usable. Tissue from first miscarriages is rarely tested, since it is assumed your miscarriage was due to a genetic defect. The best way to ensure testable tissue is to have a D&C.

Possible Signs of a Miscarriage

Sometimes, but not always, there may be signs that a miscarriage is pending. None of these things means a miscarriage is certain, but usually you will want additional monitoring if they happen.

Bleeding: Bleeding that starts and stops and starts and stops is often a sign that your hormone levels are falling. While you may still be okay, you need to have your blood hCG pregnancy hormone levels monitored. Heavy bleeding that soaks a pad in an hour is a sign that a miscarriage may be beginning. See the sections on ”Definite Signs” for more information on what to do. Keep in mind that while bleeding is always scary, 70% of all pregnancies have bleeding at some point. Both of my normal pregnancies had bleeding, heavy and red. And the one I lost at 20 weeks never even spotted.

Cramping: You are going to feel a lot of random cramping down there the whole pregnancy. The only time cramping is a concern is if you are breathing in a labor-like huff, or if you also begin bleeding with the cramps.

Loss of pregnancy symptoms: This is a question I get all the time. While the complete and sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms can signal a pending miscarriage, usually it is not the first sign. You will have many days where you don’t feel pregnant, when the nausea abates for a day or two, or your breasts are less sore. This is expected and not a concern at all. Around weeks 10 to 14, this is completely normal, as your hormone levels even out and the placenta takes over. The loss of pregnancy symptoms during a miscarriage is usually something you see in hindsight, not ahead of time.

A pregnancy test that is positive, then negative: This is a classic sign of an ectopic. Often you may also see spotting. If you have taken a pregnancy test that is positive, then another one a few days later that is negative, alert your doctor immediately. You want to rule out an ectopic or take care of it before you have to go the surgical route. If you are taking the tests in the same day, though, you might be right on the edge of a positive result, and urine later in the day may not be concentrated enough to keep the test positive. Test again the next morning to be sure.

You should always call your doctor when you are worried, however; because it is better to call for something that does not turn out to be a problem than to stay up half the night worrying about it.

When You’re Okay

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or you have already been through a loss, one thing we all have in common is worry, worry, worry. This is okay, but remember that 90% of pregnancies end with a squawling baby, regardless of the turmoil the mom has gone through to get there. Here are the most common things you will fret over, and why they are not really a problem.

Bleeding: Small amounts of brown blood (which means it’s old) are expected when the egg implants in the uterus (7-10 days after ovulation) and sometimes at the point when you would have expected your period. You may also bleed slightly after having sex, but this is probably NOT from the baby. Your cervix is soft and filled with blood, so it may bleed a little from sex. This is not considered by many doctors to be a problem, but if it alarms you, call. Up to 70% of all pregnancies have bleeding.

You will be especially scared if you see bright red blood. If you are between 10 and 12 weeks, or if it is a time you would have expected your period, do not panic. Remember that until you are quite far along, much of your uterus is not involved in nourishing the baby, and can bleed with a minor hormone fluctuation. If you are not cramping, call your doctor to let them know, stay lying down on your left side, and hopefully it will slow down, start to turn brown, and eventually stop. If you push the issue, your doctor might schedule a sonogram to put your fears to rest.

When bleeding is a problem: If it is heavy enough to make you change pads or bright red, call your doctor right away. If you begin to have cramps with the bleeding, follow the instructions under “Definite Signs” above.

Cramping: You are going to feel a lot of random cramping down there the whole pregnancy. Most of the time it is caused by the round ligaments expanding to accommodate your growing baby and uterus. If it goes away after a few pains or after you sit down and rest a bit, then you are probably all right. Cramping is a sign you are growing to accommodate the baby and sometimes a sign that you are overdoing it and should rest.

When cramping is a problem: If it continues or gets worse or if you start bleeding too, call your doctor immediately. If you begin to have labor-like breathing or a gush of fluid or blood, follow the instructions under “Definite Signs.”

Inability to eat or keep food down. This is normal! Remember that the baby is the size of a grain of rice and not exactly demanding steak dinners. When the baby starts to need the extra 300 calories a day, you will be eating fine. Just do the best you can with your saltines and soda, and remember that the more severe your morning sickness, the better your hormones are functioning.

Few or no pregnancy symptoms. Not everyone spends each day throwing up or sleeping all the time. Many people have symptoms that are light or nonexistent. This does not mean you will miscarry. Each pregnancy is different, and usually pregnancies after the first will be easier on your body. I had so few pregnancy symptoms the third time around that I actually ordered a margarita at a restaurant before my husband said, “Aren’t you forgetting something?” This never would have happened with Emily, when I spent every non-working hour sleeping or bawling over a migraine.

You should always call your doctor when you are worried, however; because it is better to call for something that does not turn out to be a problem than to stay up half the night worrying about it.

Unusual Periods that Are Not Miscarriages

There are many things that can happen in a cycle to make you wonder if you were pregnant and lost a baby, but you never took a test to know for sure. For information on this topic, click on “I’m not sure I was ever pregnant.

Are your ribs suppose to be sore when you are pregnant?

  Deanna wrote @ October 24, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Most anything can happen when you are pregnant. Your body cavity definitely adjusts and expands during pregnancy, including the separation of your stomach muscles and the stretching of your rib cage. This is very gradual, though. No telling why your ribs might be sore. It’s not a common symptom.

Is it common to bleed bright red blood after having sex with some tissue matter

  Claire wrote @ February 4, 2008 at 8:21 pm

I lost my virginity less than 48 hours ago, and my ribs are very sore. It’s the only part of my body that aches at the moment. Is this normal? This doesn’t mean I’m pregnant, does it?

  Claire wrote @ February 4, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Also, is it normal for sex to hurt severely the entire time?

  Karen wrote @ February 23, 2008 at 12:46 pm

I miscarried two years ago. A couple weeks ago I had a very faint line on three pregnancy tests. A couple days later, I woke up and bled for a few hours, passing a quarter-sized clot, with very mild cramping and my pregnancy symptoms significantly reduced. I am convinced that I miscarried, but today, several days later, my boobs are a little more tender and a pregnancy test shows a very vivid red line. What am I to make of this? I still assume that I miscarried or am in the process… Could I be wrong?

I am 20 years old, I am on the pill, I was a week late last month but I started and had a neg preg test. So I started my pills like normal. It is now day 12 of my pill pak and I am bleeding bright red blood very lightly. What is this? Was I pregnant? Am I pregnant? Am I misscarring, I can’t get to the doctor for another week, what do I do?

  Sarah wrote @ April 24, 2008 at 11:42 pm

oh yea, another bit of info. I am bleeding after sexual intercourse.

A couple weeks ago I had a very faint line on 2 pregnancy tests. A couple days later, I woke up and passed a clot that would probably fill the palm of my hand, with very mild cramping and almost no bleeding. My pregnancy symptoms significantly reduced. Several days later, my breast began to hurt like they did during my first pregnancy. I have not taken another home test to see if it is positive. I’m still having very very mild cramping, with a little spotting when I wipe. What am I to make of this? I assume that I miscarried or am in the process?

I am 6 wks pregnant and just had my first US. The doctor stated she was concerned with the development, as the US machine showed the size to be a week behind in development, with no fetal heartbeat to be heard (yet). I’m hoping that when I go back next week, there will be signs of growth and a healthy heartbeat. Any thoughts?

Hi im 9 weeks pregnant and was in a car accident yesterday. I don’t have any of these symptoms just a bit sore from my back.do you think the baby will be harmed because of the accident?

  Deanna wrote @ August 17, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Neelie,

I’m sure having a car accident was very scary. The baby is very well protected in the womb and should not be harmed by your average accident. The only things that put the baby at serious risk is when the mother has severe blood loss, a period of not breathing, no cardiac, or a severe puncture or wound in the abdomen.

However, sometimes a hard fall or jolt can pull a small bit of the placenta away from the wall of the uterus. This may or may not result in a little bleeding. A sonogram will reveal if this has happened, and usually a bit of bedrest until it heals up is the best thing to do, as well as watch for blood clot (called a subchorionic hemorrhage) that could impact the baby’s health.

I think you will be perfectly fine, but your doctor should know you were in an accident. He/she may want to check for tears in the placenta, or he may tell you that unless you bleed, you are fine. But let him decide based on how you describe the accident and how you are feeling.

I had a D & C in June and haven’t had my period but took two home pregnancy tests that came up positive on the 18th. I had heavy bleeding Saturday night that lasted for about 20 minutes but it stopped, and now it’s just brown discharge. I have a doctors appointment on September 3rd and called my doctor Saturday night and all he did was order me to have blood work done yesterday and then tomorrow. I’m just scared that I may have had another miscarriage. I don’t know how far along I am because I haven’t had a period. Should I be worrying?

  Deanna wrote @ August 28, 2008 at 12:07 pm

One of two things have happened: the first is that you did get pregnant again and may or may not be miscarrying. The other is that some tissue was missed during the D&C three months ago, and your body is just now dispelling it.

Did you take any other pregnancy tests during this interim, or have your blood levels tested? If they were negative, or your levels at zero, and then came up again, it would most likely be a new pregnancy. It is possible that it is a complication called a molar pregnancy, but that is rare and I wouldn’t consider it at this point, as you don’t really have the symptoms.

It’s really important not to have unprotected sex while all this is going on, so that you can date your pregnancy without all this worry. Because you did not resume normal periods after your D&C (you should have had one in five or so weeks), I would guess your body is finally just now getting all the hormones out of your system. This is a long recovery, but still a very common situation.

The tests will give you some answers. Hang in there.

I am a 33 year old with lupus and I am thrilled to be pregnant. I am worried because I have had brown discharge and now light bleeding for a few days with no pain. Am I possibly miscarrying?

  Renee wrote @ September 11, 2008 at 12:18 pm

My periods are slightly irregular, but they are always 4 days & light/medium. I had some dull lower back pain that started on this past Friday. Saturday I had my usual migraine when my hormone levels change; it usually signals the start of my period. Sunday my cycle began, but it was super light and bright red, but I had a lot of pressure in my lower abdomen (the back pain is still dull). Then Monday afternoon I started filling a pad every hour or so. I took a shower around 4PM & there I passed a blood clot about the size of the palm of my hand…it freaked me out becuase I had never seen one that big; I continued to bleed heavily for a while & then it slowed up again. I went to the doctor the following day for the back pain & unusual cycle. The doc said that it was most likely a miscarriage. I didn’t know I was pregnant, but I did have several signs. I’m sad, but since I didn’t know that I was prego I think it’s a little easier to cope. My husband & I are looking forward to trying again.

  marie wrote @ September 14, 2008 at 7:35 am

I am 5 weeks pregnant and have had period cramping daily from the beginning. My husband and I had intercourse yesterday morning and there was slight bleeding (pink) when I wiped. But for the rest of the day and even this morning I have had no cramping what so ever. It has never been this long without some cramping. I am worried that I miscarried or that I am going to, but there isnt any bleeding. would there definately be blood?

  Deanna wrote @ September 15, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Marie,

It is very common to have a little spotting after sex. Your cervix is now swollen and filled with blood, so it does not take much to make it bleed a little.

I know the cramping is worrying, but you will have cramps in one form or another the whole way though as your body rearranges.

Have you called your doctor yet? He/she might be able to give you some comfort on this, but until you see lots of bleeding, you are not miscarrying. The cramps and spotting might mean one is pending, but I don’t see anything that worries me yet. It’s all still pretty explainable.

Hang in there.

Hi,

I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant last week after taking 2 tests (both showing positive/3+ weeks) and visiting my doctor the following day.

Prior to this, I was totally unaware, was drinking most weekends like a typical twenty something party girl would, I’m also prone to the odd pack of cigarettes which I smoke like a chimney once i’ve had a drink. Also… i’m a dance teacher and tend to be jumping around in dance classes 3 times a week. Its not dancing for the light hearted either, involves lots of jumps, gymnastic moves, very high energy. I hadn’t really been out 2 weeks prior to finding out as I had an awful cold which I was taking lots of medication for in the means of drinking 4 cups of lemsip a day, cough syrup, vapour rub etc etc.

I have my midwife appointment booked in 3 weeks time but I cant help but think that I have an awful lot of ‘bad’ factors weighing up against me.

I’ve been reading alot about the whole m/c scenario and perhaps i’m just worrying for no apparent reason but its toture to think that i’m not going to know for sure for another 3 weeks whether this is happening or not.

I have no bleeding whatsoever, however I do have some clear fluid coming through which kind of feels like i’ve slightly wet myself (but not urine). I dont have any stomach cramps but did have quite bad lower back pain yesterday. But saying that, I am prone to back pain from a dancing injury a few years back. Also, my breasts are still sore but not as much as they were initially. More on the insides but nothing really on the outside.

Am I panicking for no reason ?

  Deanna wrote @ October 2, 2008 at 8:18 am

Teri,

You’ll be just fine as long as you stop the smoking and drinking now. A grain-of-rice sized baby isn’t getting much from you, and those things don’t cause miscarriage. Continuing to smoke and drink will damage the baby’s lungs and brain, but not if you stop once you know you are pregnant.

Hi,

It is definitley re-assuring to have a website like this to explain more to pregnant women.

I have had a previous misscariage, which in sequence started with brown discharge for a week then led to strong cramps and excessive bleeding. I had made it to 13 weeks.

I am now pregnant again and at 9 weeks started having the brown discharge again. This time I went to my doctor and he sent me for an ultrasound. They could see nothing wrong, is it just a coincidence that the brown discharge is happening. Or could it mean another misscariage? (This time It’s been over a week already and no strong cramps yet)

Thanks

  janie wrote @ October 9, 2008 at 7:48 pm

my dr said that i was suppose to be 8 weeks pregnant according to the LMP date i gave her, but the ultrasound said i was only 6 wks preg and said that there is a 50/50 chance of miscarriage. i am so confused. i went about 4 days ago, and i do have spotting but no cramps but i’m so paranoid now! what is your take on this?

  Netty-jean wrote @ October 11, 2008 at 10:42 pm

I know in the past i’ve had miscarriages. i’m had 2 that i know of but these symptoms are different. I have sharp sporatic pains in my lower left abdomen as well as my lower pack. I’m pushing 2 weeks being on my period And also this is the first period i’ve had in 3 1/2 months. Is it possible i’m having another miscarriage without heavy signs?

  Deanna wrote @ October 13, 2008 at 11:25 am

Janie,

I’m sorry you are having such a stressful time.

When a baby does not measure where it should be, one of two things has happened. Either you ovulated late that cycle and the baby is not as old as they think it should be, or the baby stopped growing at 6 weeks and has died.

I know this is a difficult and scary wait. They will probably have you come in for another sonogram in a few days to see if the baby has grown any more, or if it is clear that this little one hasn’t made it.

Just do the best you can to get through these days.

Let me know how you’re doing.

  Deanna wrote @ October 13, 2008 at 11:25 am

Netty,

I wrote you about other things this might be. I’m not sure I’d suspect a miscarriage in this case.

Thank you for this website, all the books seem so scary. I am 8 weeks and going for my ultrasound Thursday. The book says if your sick that its a sign of a normal pregnancy, i havent been sick at all, does that mean something is wrong? I dont have any spotting, my belly is growing a teeny bit and im hungry quite a bit. my sister just lost her baby at 8 weeks so im terrified that my baby will be gone thursday since i am not sick.

I miscarried last year in June. I was two and half months pregnant. I was a month and half when i went to the doctor. I took 5 tests up until then and they all came out negative, so did the test with the doctor. i miscarried a month later. Now I think I’m pregnant I have the symptoms however i should be two months and the tests say negative and the blood work came indecisive. I cant afford an ultra sound. I’m not as sick as i was last time but my stomach is getting bigger. I got tested for cysts, thyroid and acid reflux. I’m fine as far as those are concerned. Am I going to miscarry again? Why are the tests saying negative and the blood test unclear?

I have been bleeding red blood for the past 3 weeks like a period with cramps. I went to the doctor to see the reason why I was bleeding and found out that I’m pregnant. That was on monday, they took my blood to check my hcg lvls and went back on Wednesday so they could take some more blood. Now because it is thanksgiving I have to wait until Saturday to get the results. I am quite worried because on Tuesday I passed a large blood clot that looked long and stringy kinda. Should I be worried that I’m having a miscarriage?

Hi, i am 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant, i woke up monday morning with blood in my knickers – no cramping or anything – but quite a bit of blood. i have continued to bleed since and it is very red. Dr said i have to wait until friday n do anther test to see if i am still pregnant. I have had a few cramps since, like a period, nothing painful. I also found out that my grandma had ‘periods’ throughout her pregnancys, what are the chances that i am still pregnant?

I’m also feeling very ‘bloaded’ and little cramps… No bleeeding.
Please advice. Thank you!

I had 1 hleathy pregnancy in 2004 and then from 2006-2007 expereinced 3 miscarriages in a row – I took all the tests possible and nothing showed up. I am now pregnant again (after taking almost 2 years off) and am scared – I have an appointment tonight for a sonogram – I am about 5 weeks pregnant. Today I had some brownish spotting and mild cramps and am really scared that I am having another miscarriage. Can anyone out there please ease my mind as I feel that if I go through a 4th miscarriage I can tell that I will be in a deep depression, I will not be able to handle this again.
Thanks.

Hi
I have just found out I was pregnant using a home kit. My doctor said I probably was. I am just starting my 5th week and this is my first pregnancy.
Up unitl two days ago, I was exhausted all the time, had headaches, was thirsty all the time, had the odd stomach cramp and so on. Then it all just stopped suddenly and I feel nothing.
The doctor told me to prepare for a miscarriage happening and now I’m terrified of this. He won’t see me or give me a scan until four weeks’ time.
I have had no bleeing, no painful cramps – only niggly ones and only a tiny, tiny, in head worth of spotting this morning.
SHould I be preparing for the worst. Where have my symptoms gone?
I’m 34 years old. And thank you!

I began spotting at 5 weeks pregnant after a highly emotional day. The following 2 days I have been bleeding with pea-sized blood clots. The bleeding is like a mild period. I can wear one pad for a whole day and not completely fill it. Don’t worry, I am showering. I have no pain or cramping. The spotting started Friday night, bled the rest of the weekend. My doctor said to wait and come in on Monday (tomorrow), so I didn’t go to the hospital. Are these miscarriage signs? Realistically should I be remaining hopeful?

I am only 4 weeks pregnant. i have had 3 previous miscarriages this year basically around this time. my doctor calls them chemical pregnancies. my pregnancy symptoms are more apparent this time around. more gassy (sorry!), migraines with vomiting and very tired. i’ve been having the occasional pang of pain in my pelvis but no consistent pain, but my lower back started hurting and it feels like how i usually do on my first day of my period. i haven’t started bleeding or spotting though. Could this be a pending miscarriage or just my muscles expanding? i took an HCG test today and will find out what my numbers are tomorrow. i think i’m just more paranoid and really hoping that i can keep this pregnancy, b/c i know you can’t really tell me if this will end in m/c or not…but i’ve ready your responses and i’ve been comforted either way, so I thought i’d post. thanks!

Hi

I am 6 weeks pregnant. Last week I bled after my husband and I had sex. The color of the blood was light pink and there wasn’t much of it. Basically I wiped myself and it was gone. Still my husband rushed me to the doctors office. The doctor explained that it was possible and recommended pelvic rest. The problem is that that happened 3 days after my first visit, she told me that based on the sonogram the baby grew by 4 mm, but she couldn’t tell whether the baby was ok after the bleeding because it was too early for heartbeat (I was 5 weeks at that point).
I have been cramping since then and spotting brown blood for a week now. I have my doctors visit in 3 days and I was going to just wait and see what the doctor says but I dont think I can go on any longer. The family members I have talked to say that this is bad and they are all having the “it is not meant to be” conversations with me. I understand that they are preparing me for the worst so that if I loose my baby, I am not left scared and depressed, but all I want to do is lay in my bed and cry. I dont want to see anyone or anyone to tell me that I will have many healthy babies, I just want to know what is happening with this one, I dont know how I will get through the next three days. This has been the worst week of my life, I am sure that many people had worse but how can one feel so attached to something she was not aware of just two weeks ago? Do you think my baby is still alive? Thank you!

Ok, So I dont know if i was pregnant. all of a Sunday i woke up and went to the bathroom, all of a sudden huge blod clots came out and continued the entire day with horrible pain. the bleeding stopped the next day but i still have the horrible cramping. The day where i had the blod clots i just didnt feel like myself. I was not due for my period for another 2 weeks. I have a healthy child, and even since then i have always had a relativly normal period.I have a high stress job and am not even sure i would have realized i was pregnant.I am o-negative, the child i have now is also o- negative so i guess im asking if i should still see a doctor though i m not sure on if i was pregnant.

Thank you

I should be about 6wks pregnant, 1 week ago i had a very emotional day, at about 3 pm I started with abdominal cramping. When i went to the rr i saw a light pink discharge. During the rest of the evening I continued to have pink discharge and the cramping moved to my back. At midnight I had already passed a dime size blood clot, so i took of to the ER. They did a HCG test, results were 998 about weeks.Ultrasound showed nothing. I was adviced to go back for a second exam and four days later my HCG was at 678 no ultrasound. I went back to my clinic to preform another HCG test as adviced by the ER and they sent me back to the ER. This time HCG was 560 but they were able to see something in the ultrasound. Technician said i am about 4 weeks pregnant. ER doctor said that HCG’s could not be comparred coming from 2 different labs and that i have a 50/50 chance of having a miscarriage. How much longer do I have to wait to know if I am keeping my baby??? This emotional roller coaster is so stressful. They said I should have pelvic rest for about 3 weeks and that they still can not rule out a full miscarriage. They sent me back to my doctor to keep me monitored. This wait is really killing me. I have a 2yr old at home that demands to be picked up very often. I would hate to lose my baby due to the strain… Would that put me at higher risk??? Anxiously awaiting your response. I am 30 years old.

I’m 5 weeks 3 days pregnant and have lupus. Yesturday, I got home and went to the bathroom and noticed some blood in my underwear, it was kinda hard to tell what color cause of the color of the underwear. I took another pregnancy test just to make sure and it came out positive. I put a pad on just in case I kept bleeding. Like 15min later I noticed strawberry seed sized clots which got bigger over time. The largest clot I think I’ve passed was about apple seed sized. I’ve also had pretty bad cramping, but nothing that would seem labor like. I filled up half the pad in a few hours. Next day my cramps got worse but the bleeding went down. The cramps move around, sometimes there like all over period cramps and sometimes it felt more on the right side. Tonight when I wipe I notice less clots but kind of a clearish/yolky discharge along with pinkish blood. Also my boobs have gotten less sensitive, but still kinda hurt. My fiance’s mom said she had symptoms like these with both her sons. Any Ideas?

Hello I’m 23 yrs old. I have one previous pregnancy and one previous miscarriage. My LMP is november 1st. So I took a PT it was positive and to be sure I took 2 more that came out negative. I was having the prego sysmptoms, tired and sleepy a lot, cravings, urinating a lot, vomiting, and there was one day I had bloody mucus type ball come out but that was it since I hadn’t started any real bleeding I assumed I was stilll prego. Also there was another day I was having stomach flutters. And now today in the morning I had light pinkish spotting and now its getting heavier. I don’t kno wut this could mean and I’m very worried. Also yesterday was the first time in a long time that me and my bf had rough sex could the spotting be from that.. and also I have been having chest and rib pains and it hurts when I take deep breaths????!!!!

  Anna wrote @ January 19, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Also saturday night I had severe lower back pain that would come and go come and go and did not go away with regular pain reliever.

  Laura wrote @ January 20, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help with this.

My LMP was 2/12/08 , so the doctor said i am 7 weeks (based on her typical 28-day cycle chart). I have had 4 positive tests over 2 days.
however, my cycle is always long and i know i ovulated late, so i know i’m probably not as far on as that.
I have a dating scan tomorrow, but Iam terrified something is wrong, as i have been having cramps (like period cramps, not mild, but not severe enough to make me double-over in pain). The cramps have been continuous for 3 days, not even stopping when I’m sleeping.
I have had 2 missed miscarriages (really early)
and i have 2 children – i’m worried as i never experienced any cramping at all with either of them.
I have had no bleeding, but it definately feels as if my uterus is trying to expel something.
I’m terrified…please help x

Hi,
Last Thursday (1/16/09), my period began and it was relatively moderate. However on Monday (1/19/09) morning I experienced cramps. When I went to the bathroom, along with my urine, I passed a mass of tissue and blood. I’ve never experienced a miscarriage and didn’t even know that I was pregnant, but I took a pregnancy test 3 days later and lo and behold the test was positive!
After reading 1 of the entries on this site, I see that in the case of twins, its possible for one’s body to reject 1 baby and the other baby be ok. However, I’m wondering, how long does it take for one’s hormone levels to stabilize when one miscarries a singular pregnancy?

  Emily wrote @ February 1, 2009 at 2:51 pm

I am only about 4 weeks pregnant, and three days ago I woke up with cramps and had some brown discharge when I wiped. It is now Sunday and I have not had any spotting. But I am cramping pretty strongly (period strength) with some pretty strong lower back pain. I had a blood test on Friday but won’t get the results until tomorrow. In Oct 2007, I had a partial molar pregnancy and had to have a D&C.

Since I am not spotting but cramping w/ back pain, should I be worried?

I am 6 weeks pregnant and I had a miscarriage last year so i’ve been trying to use the same frame of reference but nothing in this pregnancy seems to be the same. I’ve been worried sick since yesterday and have been blowing google up with searches. I have a bad feeling I’m miscarrying again but it’s not the same as last time.
Yesterday evening I started spotting (brown) and it was very faint so i didnt think anything of it. When I got home later it was now bright red and had taken up about half of the pad. I have been cramping for a few weeks now (menstral like cramps) and i am still having the same cramps now while this bleeding is still occuring now. I havent passed any tissue but every 2-3 i’m bleeding bright red enough to take up half of a pad. I’m not sure what to do as i am in panic mode now and definitely need guidance because i cant go to a doctor considering my financial situation at the moment. Am I miscarrying? Any guidance with this issue?

Hi, i am currently 6 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I had a miscarrage last year at 10 weeks with no bleeding or cramping. It was not until my 14 week scan that i found out the baby had no heartbeat. This time i seem to be having slight abdominal pain, nothing agonising just annoying. I also seem to have an aching feeling near my ovaries. No bleeding, could i be having another miscarrage?

hi i just had a miscarriage two weeks ago… i wen tto the ER to get it checked out… the doctor tested my urine and said that i was negative.. and then just to make sure we did blood work and she said that my Hcg level was only 13… and counting from my last normal menstrual period.. i should have been 6 weeks.. the doctor told me that i was probabaly miscarrying because if i was 6 weeks pregnant, my Hcg level should be much higher… she said it should be like thousands… but yeah.. i was bleeding with no cramping and passing blood clots that’s why i wen tto the ER. now my question is… the miscarriage happened last week and i already stopped bleeding.. now i kind of feel something on the lower right side of my abdomen… it doesn’t really hurt but i can feel something there if i palpate it really deep… do you think this has something to do with the miscarriage??

  Nicki wrote @ February 23, 2009 at 6:48 pm

I found out I was pregnant with an at home test Feb. 13th. Just last night I started bleeding I didn’t have any cramping until this morning and still it is vey mild to nonexistant. I went to the doctor today and my hcg level was 406 and they couldn’t see anything in the sonogram. I think I may be about four weeks along. My doctor said it may be a miscarriage and i need to get another blood test in a week. I have heard that you can have a period while you are pregnant. I am bleeding bright red and very little clotting. I just want to know what my chances are of carring this baby to term.

My husband have been actively trying to get pregnant for a few months, and haven’t been using conctraception for much longer. My last period came at the normal time, but stopped for about 24 hours and resumed again the following day, after drinking alcohol that night (since I thought I couldn’t be pregnant). I then proceeded to spot for over a week after the normal cycle progressed. I had a negative pregnancy test a week or so after the spotting finally ended. It doesn’t sound like a miscarriage, but I don’t know what it does sound like!

Hello everyone,

I hope this website is still read – I’ve noticed there haven’t been any responses in awhile, but I am seriously hoping for one this time. I think quite a few of us have similar symptoms. I am 6-7 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing mild cramping from the beginning. Also, some brown light discharge for the past few days. Just yesterday, I had an ultrasound showing a “normal”pregnancy with the fetal heartbeat. I was relieved, but in the evening, the cramping became more severe and I had mild fresh blood until now (cramping throughout the night). I also noticed some peanut sized blood clots and got worried. My metabolism has also been a bit messy. I called the emergency Dr. who said nothing can be done unless I am bleeding to soak up pads. The bleeding isn’t that severe, but enough for me to be worried…in addition to the strong cramping and blood clots. This is my first pregnancy – I also got pregnant a couple of months after getting off the pill. Can you please advise? I hope I can get some answers/comfort along with the others who expressed similar concerns. Thanks in advance!

  Deanna wrote @ March 1, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I do respond to these, Nina, but generally I do it by email rather than here. Most women don’t remember where they posted a question and don’t always come back.

It’s important you all leave me a working email, even if it is a throwaway one. It is never published or shared with anyone, just for me to get back to you.

Hi ruth, I would be very interested to know how everything want for you. I have exactly the same symptoms as you. Bleeding started on Sat night(5weeks & 4 days) brown then red and clot like and then brown again I called my doctor today and she booked me in for a scan on Wed but I hate not knowing. I’m very weepy and don’t really have anyone to talk to except my hubby, and I need to talk to someone who has been through it.

Hello,
I just went for my ultrasound last week and was a little over 6 weeks. My nausea has always been a bothersome, but in the last few days- I’ve had very little or no nausea at all. It seems that my prego signs have significantly decreased. And my breast are not as sensitive as before. Does this seem normal? I’ve also experience some low dull back pain and headaches, and some mild cramps- but no bleeding. This is my second pregnancy. My first ended by miscarriage at 10 weeks. Any thoughts?

I am 7 1/2 weeks preganant. For the past 4 weeks I have been spotting, brown discharge, pinkish liquid and blood sometimes just as is or with some clots as small as a pea to as large a quarter. I wear a liner and nothin has come to the liner (as of yet) I usually only find this as I wipe after going to the bathroom. I have had very little cramping and goes away when I lay down. I have been resting as much as possible and rarely on my feet. I have gone to the hospital thinking I was in the midst of having a miscarraige. The ultra sound at the time showed that I was a little earlier then expected. All the doctors I have dealt with seem not to have any answers. If I was having a miscarriage would it really take 4 weeks or longer? I am thinking that something else is wrong and a bit frustrated that I have no answers and doctors don’t have any answers. What should I be thinking????????

  Stephany wrote @ March 4, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Hi,

I took a test on Monday although I spotted for several days (which I think was implantation bleeding because I have experienced this with my last 3 pregnancies…I have a 7 year old, and I had a boy and girl for a close friend of mine). With my son, I bled all the way up to 7 months. The other 2 being IVF, I had subchorionic attachment bleeding where implantation took place and this lasted up to 14 weeks. All normal deliveries and pregnancies. Since these pregnancies, I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism but am treating for the condition as well. I went to the Dr. for labs on Monday and my HCG was 232 and my progesterone was 10.8. Also on Monday, I started spotting all different colors from dark brown to bright red and even pink. No other fluid loss but I have experienced intermittent cramps but no back pain. The spotting seems to be getting worse but I’ve not soaked a pad yet. And although I have had many strange sensations in the general area I feel that my uterus would be, nothing has been extremely painful, just a little crampy and dull and achy. The Doctor thinks I ovulated late due to the fact that I also have PCOS so he started me on 100 mg. of Prometrium bid. I really do not want to be on a medication to prolong the inevitable but they want me to wait another 6 days for a repeat HCG and progesterone level before they schedule an ultrasound. I am tempted to go to the ER just to get some answers. At least if they do labs, I will know by now if my HCG has doubled or not because it has been 3 days. This is so foreign to me because up until now, I have been so blessed to avoid pregnancies with complications. I feel for all of the women on here who have suffered a miscarriage but this waiting is stressing me more than anything. Any advice???

Hi.. My doctor tells me I have lost of my baby. I don’t have much of an idea how far along I am. I have had two ultrasounds an they can’t see anything. I have had bleeding and cramping but nothing too major. My gp did an internal an seem my cervix was closed. I still have a feeling im pregnant an hoping the doctor is wrong. This is my first pregnancy and I am 19 years of age. I passed one to two blood clots which were pea sized. The colour of my bleeding started light pink an I didn’t need a pad it went away then came back and was bright red an slightly heavier. I have also had a brownish discharge. I just want to know what can I do? I still have my pregnancy symptoms.

  Lyn wrote @ March 9, 2009 at 9:11 am

This is a reply to Stephaine.

I truly understand you frustration. That is exactly what I am feeling these days with no answers. I happy to have found this web page. This is my second pregnacy (I have a 21/2yr old) and the preg’s are like night and day. I have been getting my blood taken weekly until the past 2 weeks. My levels have been increasing yet I still have this “spotting” but only when going to the bathroom or wiping. It has not reached the liner yet and no where to needing a pad. It is of different colors (sometimes brown, red, orange/red, or clear like) It is not consitant but there and sometimes clumps the size of a pea. To date I have been lucky enough not to have been cramping. The odd pain here and there but not to what would be expected if a mc or something to rush me to for medical care. I have had two ultra sonunds and no ansewrs as they say it is not big enough to see anything. I just don’t know what to think, or do. Its even harder because they don’t want me to be stressed and rest as much as possible and not to take any chances and stay off my feet. Luckily I have a wonderful husband that has been doing double duty just so I can rest. But it really weighs on your mental state. What do you do? What do you think? Thanks to Deanna from this web site she is the first that has given some type of answer and the first o tell me bleeding is common within pregnancies. Finally I don’t feel like such an out cast and I’m doing something wrong.

Hi,

I am 7 weeks pregnant and all was going normally until yesterday evening when I discovered fresh red blood when I wiped. Heavier than spotting, its not very heavy but enough to mark a few red spots on a pad. It lasted for about half an hour to an hour when it turned to a pinky, spotting consistency when I wiped. I have had no pain, no cramping and no clots.

I slept badly with the worry and this morning it seems to have turned to a pinky/brown colour and is still very light.

I’m trying to get to see a gyno this morning but am abroad and trying to organise an appointment.

Does this sound like miscarriage? Thanks in advance for your advice, I am worried sick.

Thank you for this site, Deanna.

I took an at-home test on Tuesday after having achy breasts for a couple of weeks. Don’t know how far along I am but would guess 5 weeks. On Thursday, I started bleeding – I’m not using pads & don ‘t know if tampons are a problem. The flow is heavy, like it is with my period & I am passing clots. The cramping has been consistent over the last 36 hours.

I’m assuming this is a miscarriage – how long does it last (the cramping & bleeding)? Also, how much clotting can I expect to pass? My breasts have stopped being achy & I’m wondering if I should go to my doctor for confirmation.

Hi Deanna,

I had a miscarriage in September 08 (and one healthy pregnancy in 10/06). Now I am pregnant again and currently 4 weeks. With the miscarriage last year, I had no symptoms I happened to go to the doctor at 11 weeks and they could not find the heartbeat and stated that the baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I am so worried about this pregnancy. Should I go ahead and see the doctor or wait until I am around 6-7 weeks when they can possibly hear the heartbeat? Thanks

  Cindy wrote @ March 25, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Hi Deanna,

I miscarried at 10wks,3 days. 1 week before that I did something that I am ashamed to admit: I went into a sweat lodge (a sauna-like environment) for about 20 minutes or so. I am overwhelmed with guilt and shame and anger at myself for doing something that I have read online could potentially caused a miscarriage. When I had the ultrasound to confirm that there was no heartbeat, the ultrasound tech said that I was measuring at 8 weeks, and then said the baby stopped developing in the last week (which doesn’t make sense since I was over 10 wks – shouldn’t that mean that the baby died 2 weeks prior?). Anyway, what she said corresponds with the time that I went into the lodge and oh, how will I ever forgive myself?? Everyone (friends, family) is telling me that 20 min in the sweat lodge wouldn’t do it and that crack mothers, etc. have babies, but I am just not convinced. I especially feel horrible because I have been dealing with infertility for 3 years and this pregnancy was a result of in vitro . I don’t know if I will ever be pregnant again and don’t know how I will live with myself if I somehow caused this loss.

Thank you,

Cindy

Hi Deana,

I found your website in the end of December 08 when I had my first mis-carriage. I found out our baby died at 8 1/2 weeks while I was at my 12 week down syndrome sono. On Dec 30th I had to have a d&c.

Fast forward to today. My Lmp was 2/27/09. I probably ovulated some where the week of March 16th. I had a positive preg test about 6 days ago. 2 days ago I started to have light cramping. This morning I noticed the brown spotting. A few hours later I noticed a lot of bleeding when I went to the bathroom. I have been bleeding on and off for about 5 hours noticing lots of clots in the blood and it is very red and enought cramping that I need a heating pad- similar to a really bad period.

Not sure why I’m writing in. My mom keeps saying there’s hope for us, but I think she’s wrong. I know its a mis carriage. Do you think so too? Thank you for your site.

Hi Deanna,

Your site is very helpful. Have you ever heard of spotting after a vaginal ultrasound? I am a little over 6 weeks. This was on Sunday, it’s now Friday. It’s been off and on… mostly just when I wipe. Yesterday I had a couple of dark brown stains in my panty liner. Also, last night, I had a tiny spot of what looked like a brighter blood (mucus looking) mixed in with the brown blood. Have you heard of this? I have the mild growing pains. It’s so hard to differentiate between those and cramping. I am not doubled over in pain but they cause a little discomfort. Thanks a lot.

After 4 years of trying to have a baby, our wish was finally granted. As of right now I am 6 weeks and about 2 days along.
This afternoon I discovered that I was spotting pink blood. It only showed up when I was wipeing. Waited a little while, and went to the bathroom again. This time I had a tiny clot.

I headed to the er, where I was pretty much told there was nothing they would do, just have to wait and see. After laying down for about 5 hours, the spotting has seemed to stop.

I have no cramping, no back ache. Am I fixing to lose my miricle? Please help.

I went in to the Dr. on Saturday morning with crazy pains in my right side. It felt as if I was beginning my period but worse and only on the right side. I had started spotting the night before, very light brown. My last period began on 5-30 so too soon for normal period. The Dr. found that I was pregnant and worried it was in the tube so I was rushed to the ER. After numerous pelvic exams and 2 ultrasounds, they were not able to find any sign of pregnancy but did find lots f blood. They assume that a cyst on my ovary ruptured to cause this bleeding but they were not able to see so were not positive. I was kept overnight to make sure the internal bleeding stopped and by this morning I was bleeding heavier with tissue-like substance as well. The severe pain has sub-sided and is now just dull, but remains on the right side. My right lower back has been hurting throughout this as well. My hcg was only at 87 so they believe that I am either miscarrying or that the pregnancy is somewhere it”s not suppose to be. I have to go back on Tuesday to do more blood work. If the hcg rises they will do another ultrasound or scope to see if they can find it. I’m absolutely terrified and the last two days have been AWFUL. Do you agree with the steps being taken? They mentioned that the pain and vaginal bleeding could just be a coinincidence and that I may (but not likely) still have a normal pregnancy. Anything you have to say about all of this would be extremely appreciated!

I am about 5 wks and 3 days along. Yesterday I started spotting and it was brownish/red. As the day went on, the blood became bright red. I called the doctor and she sent me to have my hcg levels checked. She called this morning and said they were 41and to go back tomorrow and have it checked again. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I don’t remember these symptoms with my first 2 BUT I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was almost 8 weeks. So this is all new to me and I’m a little worried. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Deena,

This is my first pregnancy and I am 6 weeks along. Last night on Saturday I went out partying with my cousin. I was careful not to drink or do anything stupid, but I did a lot of walking, as I was visiting NYC, and we stayed out until 5:30 in the morning. I had to hold my pee for a really long time until I got home and I also had to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate. During the middle of the night while wiping myself, I saw a bright red blot of blood. As I continued to blot,, it was less and less until it was nothing more than faint pink or nothing at all. I suspect that the blood was just secreting at a slower rate because I noticed brown discharge when I awoke in the morning. My question is: Are these early warning signs of a misccariage or a normal part of the process? Also, did my night of “partying” potentially affect my body negatively?
Thanks for your time.

SINCE THIS QUESTION MIGHT HELP SOME OTHERS, I’M POSTING MY ANSWER HERE. ORDINARILY I JUST EMAIL ANSWERS FOR PRIVACY, BUT THIS ONE INCLUDES THE FACTOR OF FEELING GUILT, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE NO ONE EVER FEELS ANY GUILT ABOUT AN ACTIVITY THAT WAS CLEARLY UNRELATED TO A PREGNANCY COMPLICATION.

First, I want to be clear that your night of walking with friends does not cause miscarriage. No way. Some moms work very hard jobs. Some are aerobics teachers or personal trainers. Exercise is very healthy.

So four things could be happening. I’ll put them in the order of most likely.

First, in early pregnancy, only a small part of your uterus is involved in making the baby. The rest of it is filled with blood and just hanging out until it’s needed. If you get a small hormone shift, then some of it will bleed. This hormone shift could just be a natural part of the growth, it could have been from fatigue. If this is all it was, then your body will recover and you will not see any more bleeding.

Second, the cervix is filled with blood now. Any activity that might put some stress on it — sex, vaginal exams at the doctor, or excessive exercise, can make it bleed a little. This is not any sort of concern. Again, your body will recover and you will not see any more bleeding.

Third, if the pregnancy is not going well, if the baby is not growing and not enough hormones are being produced, then the miscarriage is just waiting to begin. In that case, walking, sex, or other exertions will help it get started, and this bleeding is the beginning. If this is the case, then you will continue to see spotting and bleeding.

Fourth, and less likely, is a pregnancy complication where either a blood clot got caught in the implantation spot, or the baby is implanting too close to the cervix. In either case, exercise or other exertion can cause bleeding. In most cases, the pregnancy will continue normally, either the clot will heal or the placenta will shift upward and away, but it is a situation to watch.

I would continue to live life normally, although maybe cut down on the exercise just for now. If you need piece of mind, your doctor can give you two blood tests to check on your hormone levels to check the pregnancy.

Hang in there.

Hi. I am so glad I found this website! It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one going thru difficulties while being newly pregnant.

I had 4 positive home pregnancy test results on May 24th from 3 different PT brands. However, when I went into a clinic on May 26th for confirmation and ultrasound to see how far along I was, they said my PT result was negative!

Then the next day I had the worst paralyzing cramps ever! May 27th. I was in so much pain and blood poured out of me! I passed out from the pain. I saw a blood clot the size of half a pea, so not very big. The bleeding was barely anything on May 28th and 29th.

So I figured I wasn’t pregnant anymore, so I quit taking my multivitamin and iron pills and went on about my life.

Only around June 14th I noticed a brown line going down my belly button all the way down. And heartburn was keeping me awake at night. And nausea still. I almost thru up in Krogers from the sight of everything from fruit to ketchup to meat and candy!

So on Monday June 15th I took another home PT and it was instantly positive in less than a minute! So I went back to the clinic. Positive there, too. But they did an ultrasound and couldn’t detect a heartbeat.

So they told me to find another doc and go within 2 weeks. I just got health insurance today and I have an obgyn appt on Monday the 29th. I am praying for the best! But Wed the 17th I had a tiny light brown discharge. And today I had a dull lower back pain and some little bit of red bleeding. I don’t want to see any blood! I’m only 22 and I want this baby to make it successfully full term! I had miscarriages in Feb 2004 and Feb 2005 with and D&Cs for each of them.

What is going on?! Any advice?! Help! I’m stressing, I’m a nervous wreck, and I work 2 jobs both of which I have to stand on feet.

Hi. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for over a year now. In Sept. 2008 my ob/gyn determined I was not ovulating and I began taking Chlomid. After 2 cycles I became pregnant but miscarried after after 5 weeks. I found out a week ago that I am pregnant and am now 5 weeks & 2 days. I don’t know what a normal pregnancy is because during my first I spotted from day one and had severe cramps. I have been having cramps since I was a few days before I was to start my period. Some have been bad enough to double me over but mostly it has been continual & uncomfortable mild cramping. It has been mostly in my lower abdomin but the severe ones catch me in my lower back as well. So far there has been no spotting not even implantation bleeding. My concern is that I might have another miscarriage. Should I be concerned that I may have had a missed miscarriage or is this normal?

  concerned wrote @ July 29, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Hi!!! Well to start off I’ve had 2 miscarriages, one at 7 weeks and the other at 6 weeks. I’m 11 weeks pregnant, but I haven’t had an ultrasound yet. This pregnancy feels different from the others. I’ve been getting morning sickness which I didn’t get with the others. I’m not bleeding or cramping or anything like that. My breast stopped hurting a couple days ago and my back has been hurting also, but my back has always hurt me for as long as I can remember, so I’m never really sure if that’s ever a symptom of miscarriage for me. Could it be a symptom? When do ur breast normally stop hurting during pregnancy?and could that be a symptom?

Also I’m pretty thin, I believe I’ve been feeling movement, and that’s another thing I didn’t feel with the other pregnancies. Is that possible at about 9-10 weeks?

Hi

I am nearly 8 weeks pregnant. I am worried because I have been bleeding for the last 3 weeks. First it was just brown, now it is often red. It is not heavy enough to soak a pad but enough to need to wear one.

I went for an early ultrasound scan a week ago and there was a heart beat and everything looked fine. But the bleeding has got quite a bit worse since then and I’m worried a miscarriage is pending. I have not really had any cramps.

I have had very little pregnancy symptoms and no nausea so I’m worried that also means my hormone levels are low and that a miscarriage is more likely.

What do you think?
Thanks so much
Tina

Now all of a sudden i don’t feel the baby move it’s been that way for about 3 days. I have’nt had any bleeding of cramping. I have had lower back pain but thats from the weight gain right? Should I be worried about losing the baby?

Hi there,
I Started having pregnancy symptoms about four weeks ago, and I have not taken a pregnancy test yet. I waited to see if my period was late and it was by three weeks. My periods have been every 28 days since I got it, and my periods are usually light/medium flow but this time it was clotted off and on as well as very light brownish, lasted about six days. About a week before I got it I was having really bad cramps almost like menstrual cramps, and back pain/headaches. I have been getting sick early in the morning around six a.m and it lasts around two hours. I have never been Pregnant before so can you give me some advise? Please!

I’m really anxious. The dr. said there could be two results (1. miscarriage or 2. the dates were off) but didn’t tell me the percentage either way. Do you know any stats or info on this??

I had an ultrasound last Monday and the doctor said that it showed that I was about 5 wks but according to my lmp I should’ve been almost 8 wks. On Saturday I passed a pinkish little ball and for the next day I was spotting. Last nite I started bleeding and today I’ve been bleeding and its kind of stringy also with slight cramping. Am I having a miscarriage or what could be happening ?

Has anyone ever had Hcg levels that were really low in the beginning but an u/s that said they were farther along? My Hcg levels right now are only at 250 which puts me at about 3 weeks prego, but my u/s puts me at about 5 weeks. They took more blood to check the Hcg levels again, but I don’t know the results yet and scheduled another u/s, but now I have started bleeding and it’s really light pink and almost looks more mucus like than an actual period or blood clots. I am just really worried cause I have endometriosis and had to have an ovary removed and didn’t think it was going to be easy to get prego and here I am, I just really don’t want to lose the baby! So I am paranoid….Any thoughts???

Hello,
I think I may have miscarried at about 3.5 – 4 weeks along. My periods are NEVER late, irregular and are light/medium for about 3 days for pretty much the last 18 years! I felt pregnant, had all the signs of pregnancy and I was really happy. My BF was scared as he didn’t want it so I did not take a pregnancy test at all (we have had a bit of a rough go lately and are living separately, but still together). On the 20th I had faint bleeding for a few days until we had intercourse early morning 23rd, then I had brown/pink discharge for a few days and since late evening on the 24th I have had very heavy bleeding (red/purple) with a tiny bit of clotting noticed in the shower. I NEVER have a heavy flow and never any irregularities – my period is hardly a bother at all since it is so easy to maintain.
Should I still get a pregnancy test to ease my mind? I’ve been very depressed since I figured I lost the pregnancy and I feel guilty and to blame for it (drinking, smoking, stress, etc.). I heard that you can still detect a lost pregnancy 2 wks after the fact. I wonder if women who feel like they miscarried still take a test just to get over the wonder?

Hi,
According to my LMP, I am 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. I started having very light pink spotting after bowel movements last week. On Monday the light pink spotting started spontanously. I went to the ER and while I was there the bleeding progressed to bright red with blood clots (biggest the size of a quarter). I have had no pain what so ever. They checked my HCG and it was 242 and they couldn’t see anything on an ultrasound. It has been two days and i am still bleeding bright red but with very few small clots and it is much less (one pad all day). Is it possible to still be pregnant? I have another appointment on friday to recheck my HCG but my mind is racing 24/7. Thanks for your help.

  Tina wrote @ August 27, 2009 at 8:21 am

I forgot to mention that the bright red bleeding didnt start until I had a vaginal ultrasound in the ER. They also did an ultrasound to check for the egg implanting in my tubes.

Hi. I am 5 weeks and 2 days pregnant with my second child. It has been 9 years since my son was born so I have forgotten a lot of the small details of being pregnant. Is it normal to not have morning sickness at this stage of pregnancy? When should I expect it?

  Jillian wrote @ August 28, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Hi. According to my LMP, I am 5 weeks and 5 days. I found out I was pregnant last Tuesday after a pee test at the local clinic. I work as a bartender so I’m on my feet all day. Last week when I got off work, I went to the bathroom and noticed there was just a little blood (no tissue) in my underwear. But none the next day or the day after. Friends who have been pregnant said that happens. So here it is a week later and I started spotting bright red yesterday and it’s continued today. Still no tissue. Definitely not enough to fill a pad but do need to wear a pantyliner. And there’s some every time I wipe. I don’t have any pain, but I do have a little “twinge” on the right side. Not really sure how to describe it; it kinda feels like someone has their hand around my right fallopian tube. I’m not scheduled to see a doctor for 2 week, and I REALLY don’t want to go sit in the ER for hours if they’re just gonna tell me there’s nothing they can do. I want this baby. Oh yeah, I’m gonna be 41 next month and this would be my first pregnancy. Please advise. Thanks!

  Jillian wrote @ August 28, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Oh yeah, if I miscarried or am miscarrying, will I still show up as pregnant if I get a store PT test?

Hi,

I had an ultrasound last week – and i think i should have been about 8 weeks, but the tech said the baby measured about 7 weeks 4 days. They were not able to find the heatbeat in a vaginal Ultra sound- but the midwife said she couldnt get a clear view and wasnt used to the machine she was using. She didnt seem to concerned.

I was sent down to the lab to have a belly ultrasound – and that tech was also not able to see the heartbeat.

They wanted to schedule me for a D & C that day – but i just wasnt ready. They scheduled me for an appointment next week. I also requested another ultrasound at that time.

I have researched a lot – and am not holding out much hope – but i was wondering if there is any chance it might have been to early to see the heartbeat?

I may have been off on my LMP date by 2 or so days, and my cycles are generally 31-32 days. It seems like the timing might still be okay – but what are the chances they just missed the heartbeat?

I am still very nauseaus and exhausted – i feel exactly the same as before the ultrasound revealed no Heart Beat. I have had no bleeding or cramping whatsoever.

Thanks,

Sarah

The breaks went out and i was in the passenger seat with my feet up on the dash board. No one was hurt .. and i thought i was fine an hour after the crash i started to experience lower back pains thinking it was due to me having my feet on the dash about 2.5 hours after the crash was standing up talking to my father about it and i felt as if i had urinated in my pants for no reason. When i went the the bathroom there was quite alot of blood and a different color then my period has ever been before then almost instantly cramps started.. It is possible that i am 4 to 5 weeks pregnant does this sound like a miscarraige to any one?

Yesterday I had terrible stomach pains & thought I was having a miscarriage. But the pain subsided & although I am still sore I have had no bleeding or discharge as yet. My husband & I made love last night & there was no bleeding after that either. Am I having another miscarriage? It doesn’t feel like it did last time but the pain yesterday was agonising. I did another test last night & it was very positive… how long does it take for the hormone levels to drop to the point where they show a negative result? I still feel very pregnant but have this soreness in my lower stomach.

I am 9 weeks and 2 days prego with twins that never developed. I have both amniotic sacks & yolk sacks still growing inside me, but no embryo. I have gone in for ultra sounds once a week since I was almost 6 weeks. This is my 2nd pregnancy, I have a 1 1/2 year old son. I was wondering how long it would take before I miscarry? We found out they died almost a month ago, and we really can’t afford a D & C, but I don’t want to wait for a miscarriage forever. Hi there, I have a miscarriage question…
I found out last week that my baby stopped growing at 6 weeks when I shoul dhave been 9 weeks. I opted to take the pills to induce the miscarriage since I had not started spotting or anything and I just wanted this to be over. I didnt want a D/C because I have heard it causes scar tissue which makes it harder to concieve. Anyways, I inserted the pills Monday night, I had no cramping or bleeding until the next morning where I passed a large ammount of small blood clots and whitish goo. I had very slight cramping but nothing serious. I had some cramping the rest of the week but tylenol controlled it. Today I have had severe cramping that just kept getting worse, I took a IBF 800 that was prescribed and when no relief I took a Vicodin. I still am cramping pretty bad and when I got up of the couch I felt like something came out and there was a lemon sized blood clot in my pad and then I passed another one which was bigger into the toilet. Since then I have felt like the blood was just pouring out but I have not soaked through a whole pad yet and I have passed 2 more very large blood clots.
Is this normal for a miscarriage? Could I just now be passing the the tissue? SHould I worry and go to the ER ? I dont have a fever or any other symptoms of infection. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much!

First off I would like to say that I learned alot from reading your “article” and from the comments and questions above. . . I have been really worried because my Fiancee is at the end of the first trimester and about a week ago she had called me overnight when she was at her friends house and was bleeding heavily from her vagina. Her friend, being a nurse, kinda checked out the area and saw a cut looking thing inside of her. I don’t know if that is normal or not but the bleeding and her constant cramps are starting to worry me due to the fact that she had a miscarriage earlier this year.

I would like to thank the writer of this article . I just came home from the hospital . I found out I was pregnant while I was bleeding , from what I thought was my period , as it was around that time . I went to the ER as soon as possible and they said my cervix was closed and released me .However the symptoms continued . I was bleeding heavily , bent over in pain and passing clots & tissue . I returned to the hospital to see what the f–k was going on & my levels had dropped from 11.1 on Monday to 8.4 this morning & 7.3 that afternoon . After recieving the news , I was naturally distraught & decided i need to learn about my condition . This article will be bookmarked on my web browser , I do appreciate the advice given as well as the information , thanks .

On Friday I started bleeding red blood that only lasted for a couple of minutes. When I went to the bathroom after that and wiped myself there was brown mucous on the paper. This continued until Sunday when I started to get mild cramping in the morning. I also had a bleed about 10 days ago that lasted for the day. It wasn’t heavy but my Dr has put me on Duphaston morning and night. With my history do you think I am in the middle of miscarrying again? The last 4 miscarriages I didn’t have much bleeding at all…probably less than I have had over the weekend..Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. HI.
I took a home pregnancy test on 9/27/09. I went to teh Hralth Department to do a Pregnancy test exam and it came up positive on 9/29/09. Yesterday 9/30/09 i noticed some bleeding. No clots just between light and mld. I feel as if I had not taken a pregnancy test and found out that i was pregnant i would say that I am on my cycle. This is the first time this had ever happened to me. I have a 4 month old daughter already. My idea is it could be of the three choices
a. I am not pregnant and is on my cycle
b. I am pregnant and is on my cycle
c. I am threatening a miscarriage.
What are your imputs on this matter. I am cramping and bleeding like i am on my period but just light.

Kimberly, your email bounced, so I’ll put this here so you will hopefully see it (I normally respond only by email, otherwise these pages would have so many comments they would take forever to load.)

It is definitely not a good sign if you are bleeding and cramping together. Some women bleed a tiny bit when they would have expected a period. And everyone has some cramping as the body rearranges for the growing uterus.

But having both those right now isn’t the best thing.

The pregnancy test is very accurate. False positives are very rare.

Just take deep breaths and see how it goes. If the bleeding never gets bad and just goes away, it might just be a little hormone snag due to the cycle, and you could be okay. I’d put the odds at about 25% of that happening. The rest go to having a full-blown period.

You can find out what is going on by having two blood tests taken three days apart. If the numbers of pregnancy hormones double, you are still doing okay. This is called an hCG quantitative blood test.

But you may know before that if you continue to bleed for more than a day.

Hang in there.

Dear Deanna,

I would so appreciate something from you on this. I’ve seen a few emails like this one, but couldn’t find replies in the thread as you reply individually, so here goes. I am 5 weeks pregnant (this is my first pregnancy), have had no scans etc. I very often feel a deep, dull aching back pain, and this is often accompanied by deep, dull aching abdominal pain. During the day it comes and goes, and during the night when in bed I often have it much of the night – last night was the 4th and worse night since I discovered I was pregnant. I have had no bleeding. I am so anxious that this could be a sign of miscarrying. Please advise!
Many thanks for your time,.

Hi- I’ve had 2 miscarriages over the past 6 years, no children. I turned 36 on Sunday and found out I was pregnant in August. Lmp is July 28, 09 but have pcos and I ovulate late. I am 99 percent certain that I began ovulating on Aug 14 and conceived on Aug 17. At three weeks doc sent me for hcg and progesterone – said they were low. Last week did ultrasound, said there was a sac but no baby??? Said sac measured 6w and 1d but lmp puts me at 8 wks. Had sex 6w and 2d before ultraound – so I assume my numbers are more correct then theirs. How do you see a sac with no baby? Is it too early? I have another appointment this Thurs for another ultrasound. I have had no bleeding and just normal little cramps here and there – no throwing up (with 2 pg before none either) A tiny bit of nausea here and there and boobs hurting on and off. I have 8 friends who are pg and I just can’t go through another miscarriage. Please any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated – I am on pins and needles

hi, i am a 20 year old mother of two who is expecting again in may putting me accordint to life choices pregnancy clinic at 6 weeks 6 days. I have had lots of cramping sporatically this whole pregnancy. Especially at night. I have been sick for about 4 weeks everyday at least 2 times a day. I however have not felt pregnant this last couple of days except for the fact that my breasts are so tender on the outside near my armpit regend. I have been under a great deal of stress as i and my husband are both unemployed for the first time with a 3 year old and 16 month old. My husband and i arent doing so hot and constantly are fighting about something. Could this cause me to misscarrie and I dont have an appointment with an ob until October 27 for nurse history and October 30 for my first prenatal visit. I already called my doctor about the nausea and the ordered phenergan. But, like i said I have had no symptom in a couple of days except for the tender breast. What should I do. The cramping is this a sign that I could misscarrie I have had NO bleeding or spotting. May I have someones take on this its much appreciated during this stressfull time.

Thanks so much

Hi, I am 11 weeks pregnant. I had an ultrasound done and seen the baby’s heartbeat at 7w 5d and all was well. Now, I just got back from what was supposed to be an ultrasound to test for down syndrome. After this ultrasound I was supposed to go for blood work, I was told that I did not have to go. This will be my fourth miscarriage. So far there is no bleeding or cramping, but my heart is breaking. I was just wondering if maybe they tried to do the scan too early and that is why they wouldn’t send me for the blood tests?

Thank you

Is it possible to have a DNC when you are 41 weeks pregnant with twins?

Hi, I am 4 weeks and 1 day pregnant. Next week, my firm will be starting a new job that will require me to survey some buildings. It will require me to be walking around for at least 8 hours per day plus climbing lots of stairs, at least 40 stories. I just want to know if this will harm my baby or lead to a miscarriage. I will be turning 32 soon.
Thank you.

I think that some times you do know something is wrong when your symptoms go away all of the sudden. With my second pg I had nausea similar to my first starting around week 6 then one day I woke up (at 8 weeks) and felt fine. I started to worry something was wrong, but tried to put my worry aside and at my 10 week appointment I found out I was right and had a missed miscarriage, which ended right around the time my symptoms disappeared. So loss of symptoms can be something to worry about even if you do not see bleeding or other signs of an active miscarriage.

Hello-
Today I am 5 weeks, 1 day pregnant with my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy was perfect with no complications, I am 26 years old. On Saturday (Oct.17) I woke up with mild to moderate (my normal menstrual cramping)cramping that only lasted about 6-8 hours and some spotting which turned into light bleeding on Sunday (Oct.18). It so now Monday morning and I still have light bleeding. I have not filled a pad, I just change my pad every 2-3 hours just because. I have only had one clump/clot that was small about the size of a pea maybe a little bigger. I have no more cramps. I called my doctors office over the weekend and spoke to an advice nurse but she said there really wasn’t much they could do because it was the weekend. My doctors office is supposed to be calling me today but it seems like forever…Could this be a miscarriage?

Thank so much-

I noticed a slight weight gain and my activity has slowed down but i eat very little. about two weeks ago i noticed a little back pain and soon after my breast are tender along with my nipples. I also noticed late last week some clear fluid here and there. I didnt know if that was due to sex? But two days ago, I got my period (?) Horrible cramping and almost what seemed to be a fever I took Ibprofuen what i usually take for cramps but then by the evening I wasnt bleeding much at all by bed time I was fine my boyfriend and I had sex and then i began to bleed a little, I woke up and there was nothing again. today I am bleeding but it goes in and out the bleeding. My breast are still tender and I feel very nasusea and i also threw up last night and was very uneasy. So I took a pregnancy test one negative another unclear. Am I pregnant, was I? I dont know but I still feel sick?!

Hi Deanna,

I want to start off by saying Thank you for all the advice and worries that you have been able to give to the women above here. I hope you’ll be able to help me too.

7 weeks ago I had unprotected sex and my period should have come about 3 days afterwards, but instead it came a week and a half late, was very light and very short with only minimal cramping. I’m usually very regular for both time and flow so this one was weird. I took a pregnancy test that may or may not have been taken wrong (who knew five seconds of peeing would be so hard?) which came back negative. So I forgot about it until my next period didn’t show up and about a week ago I started getting really nauseous and vomiting sometimes, so I thought that I might be but last night/this morning I started bleeding really heavily, with only tiny tiny cramps. My mother wants me to get another pregnancy test after I finish bleeding, but should I wait?? Was I even pregnant? I’m so terribly confused and worried. Please any advice would be great at this point. I’m not sure I can stand this “Am I? Aren’t I?” game anymore.

hi, I had a miscarriage last January, and am now pregnant again. I am at eight weeks and three days, but have had some cramping and am now bleeding a little. It seems to me this is the way things started out last time. The doctors told me spotting was normal and that I was ok, and a few days later I had a miscarriage. The last two days there has been a little bleeding, with today being the worse. Is it likely that history is repeating itself?

Hi,

I had a subchorionic hematoma at 7 weeks with severe cramps and lots of blood. I am pregnant with twins and both are fine and I am now 10 1/2 weeks pregnant. However, I am still bleeding. I fluctuate between brown spotting to red blood (not heavy) but no more cramps. The Dr. told me that it will heal itself and many many women go on to have healthy pregnancies. I’ve also read this on the internet. You stated that this can affect the babys health. In what way? I am very concerned about all this bleeding. Thanks@

Lately when i have wipped there are blood clots but i still get all the symptoms. I was wondering if I could still be pregnant and the clots are just parts of the placenta that are falling off? Im very concerned seeing how this is my first pregnancy. Is it normal to bleed this much and still possible be pregnant?

Hello,

I just took two pregnancy tests last Saturday and they were both positive. I’m guessing I’m about 4 weeks pregnant. I have a doc appt Friday. Two weeks ago, I went and had a panoramic xray done so that the dentist could look at my TMJ. He also prescribed me Ibuprofen 800 mg 3 times a day. I took this about a week, then I found out I was pregnant and stopped taking it. Do you think all this could have hurt the baby? I’m very worried about it and very anxious to get to the doctor. Could you let me know if you think?

Hi Deanna,

I am pregnant & have two yoke sacks one has a baby pole measuring 3 mil meters and the other sack looks empty. My last period was Sept 1st 09 and my conception date was the 16th, but I did not implant until around the 20th or so. My ultra sound showed that I am just about 6 weeks and the Nurse practitioner said that’s what my uterus seemed to feel in the position of 5-6 wks prior to the ultra sound which backed up the nurses estimations. The ultra sound showed no heart beat on the one pole that I have, but I am thinking it could just be too early. I had blood work done my HCG’s a few weeks back were 11,700 and retested the day before yesterday were at 35,000.. The nurse said I should have higher HCG’s by now and thinks that my pregnancy is going to miscarry. I went on to find on the American Pregnancy Org site that for being 5-6 weeks 35,000 HCG isn’t bad, but I am thinking that is for one pregnancy. Do you think that maybe I could miscarry both or maybe just the empty sac? Also, with having gone in a few days ago to find one baby pole measuring 3 mil meters how much growth can I expect to find once I return for another ultra sound in a week? What should my baby measure at and do you think that by 6 wk 6 days a heartbeat should be able to be seen? I’ve been extra thirsty lately, had a headache and some minor pains as well.. I am eating really well, but super picky about my food lately and peeing a ton, no sore breasts though and I’ve had a little bit of tinted pink mucus today, but maybe that could be from having a vaginal ultra sound 2 days ago?

Any thoughts or advice you have on my situation would be greatly appreciated!
I am very realistic that there are no guarentees no matter what, but gosh it’s hard to not know ..
More about me: I’ve had 2 successful single pregnancies & this is my first twin pregnancy.
I am the mother to a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old Happily married for 6 years.

Much Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.

Hi,
I am 31 years old and about 7 weeks pregant with my first pregnancy. Yesterday I had some brownish discharge in my panties and abot 20 minutes later I went to the bathroom and there was some blood on the tp when I wiped. It was never enough to make it out onto my panties, only when I wiped I saw some red and some really tiny clots. I called my Dr. and they told me to go to the hospital to get an ultrasound. I did and they said that from the ultrasound the gestational sac was only 7mm and too small for the fetal age and that I have a 4.3 cm cyst in my left ovary. They did not see anything else or see a heartbeat. They did both an outer ultrasound and an internal one with a camera. They also did a pelvic exam and said that my cervix is closed which they said was a good sign. I am not having any pain and I have some slight cramping, but it feels like gas and it is relieved when I pass gas. My HCG level was at 9326.0. They diagnosed me with a threatened miscarriage and told me to follow up with my Dr.. Today I am getting some really dark brown stuff, almost black, when I wipe with the same tiny clots(less than pea sized) every once in a while. My breasts have been sore the entire time and today and yesterday they feel very slightly less sore, but it could in my head. I am not getting any morning sickness. I am terrified to lose this baby, I have wanted it so badly. I have another Dr. appt tomorrow morning to check my HCG levels to see if they have risen. I am wondering what the chances are that I can continue with this pregnancy and when I will be able to know for sure if I am miscarrying or not. I read all kinds of stuff on the internet and I am so confused. Does the fact that the gestational sac is only 7 mm and the fact that they did not see a heartbeat(which I read should be visible by 6 weeks) mean that my baby has died? I am so nervous and scared.

I first wanted to echo what others said and thank you for this website. It is the only thing I found during my search today that was calming and supportive and reminded me I am not alone in worrying about this.
I am 6-7 weeks pregnant for the first time (after almost 3 yrs of ttc) and I’m about to turn 35. I have been experiencing alot of nauseau all day long for the past two weeks+ with sore breasts, etc. and have had a positive test with Planned Parenthood. But yesterday I felt pretty good all day and this morning I woke up without feeling nauseous at all. I am beginning to freak out a bit. We were so excited we have already started spreading the news.
My first physical exam isn’t scheduled for another 2 weeks – I’ve not had any bleeding or cramping so should I just wait for that appointment and try not to worry in the meantine or? Could I take another home test and would a negative result tell me if I had miscarried? My husband is very supportive but thinks if I worry too much about this it could have negative effects on the pregnancy – it’s hard to control feeling scared though!
Any thoughts?

hi, i have had 2 known early miscarriages (7wks and 4.5wks) before my healthy son I gave birth to 6 months ago. I also have a healthy 4 yr old. Now I’m pregnant again and I’m 6 weeks along. I’ve had no morning sickness like i did w/ my sons. 2 nights ago I had 1 tiny spot when I wiped then nothing until this morning. There is some light pink when i wipe only. I have no cramping. Could this be another miscarriage?? I don’t know what to think. With my other miscarriages once I started bleeding it continued and got heavier. I can’t get to the doc’s for a couple days so just looking for another opinion. Thanks

I am 6-7 wks preg. started bleeding Sun. night went to the doc on Mon. had u/s and was told my hormone levels and u/s showed I was only 4-5 wks. or that was when the fetus stopped growing. I am still bleedind and now passing clots, but have no cramping. I have miscarried before and had severe cramps right away. I have to get more blood work tomorrow to check hormone levels again I am really nervous. Does anyone know anything about the H1N1 vaccine ? I had one when I was about 4-5 wks. and I am wondering if that is what has caused all of this ?!

Hi, I have three children and I’m now 7 weeks pregnant with my fourth. A few days ago I started lightly bleeding. Mainly when I wipe. It’s been either brown or light pink, no red. I’ve never bled before during any others pregnancies, so this is all new. I don’t have a doctors appointment for about two weeks and I was a little worried. Any help here would be great. Thanks.

  Deanna wrote @ November 25, 2009 at 12:08 am

Generally I respond privately, but since H1N1 is mentioned, I’m going to post my answer to Amy.

There is no medical connection between the vaccine and miscarriage. Actual swine flu is, however, dangerous to pregnant women.

I know we want answers. Most miscarriages are caused by genetic errrors during cell division. There is no way to predict when it might happen or to prevent it.

Dear Deanna,

This website seems really helpful. Thank you for hosting it. I’m 5-6 weeks pregnant–based on HCG levels on Nov. 13 (214), 16 (1535), and 18 (3557) and an ultrasound on the 20th. This is my first pregnancy. Yesterday (November 24) I had an approximately 15 minute episode of severe cramping. It was the kind of cramping that made me break out in a sweat and not be able to move. I wasn’t breathing in a huffy way, however. There was no accompanying blood, but about six hours later I found a half a dime-sized amount of thick brown mucus in my underwear. There was no blood when I wiped. I called my OB’s office this morning and spoke with the nurse, who told me to rest and keep my feet up and refrain from sex for 48 hours. I’m still feeling pregnant–mild nausea, tender and enlarged breasts–and have little twinges of crampy feelings in my abdomen and a very small amount of whitish discharge, which I have read is normal. Do you think I’m ok? I know it’s just a waiting game, but I’m trying to get all the information I can. Would it help to get HCG levels today and Friday? Would it help to take a pregnancy test? Is it possible that I have miscarried without any bright red blood or without discharging any other tissue? Is it likely I will miscarry, if I haven’t already?

Thank you so much for your help.

Emilie

Hi Deanna,
I am 11 weeks pregnant and have been spotting first red, now brown blood for two days. I have had back ache but no cramping, but today my only pregnancy symptom, my sore breasts, has stopped. I am really worried, it’s my first pregnancy and I haven’t told any family members yet as I wanted to wait until 12 weeks when I felt things would be a little more stable, so I have little support. I have spoken to my midwife, who is sympathetic, and referred me to the early pregnancy unit, who said that my symptoms didn’t warrant an early scan (in the UK so my first scan isn’t until 12 weeks). My scan is the 7th December, and it looks as if I’m going to have to wait until then to find out for sure what is going on!!
Any advice would be really appreciated as I am feeling very worried and tearful, which isn’t helping matters if baby is still sticking in there!!

Thanks.

With my other pregnancies I had severe morning sickness from day one till 16 weeks. With this one I have NONE AT ALL! And ts freaking me out. I feel great. No tiredness, no breast tenderness, no nausea. No symptoms. Is this normal. I can’t see my doctor yet until my insurance it activated next week. In the meantime I am freaking out! Am I really pregnant? Or did the pregnancy stop? Please help!

I’m moving into my 11th week. For the last 9 days, I’ve had increased bleeding each day. On days 4 and 6, I had HCG tests done: the numbers were increasing. I’ve “passed” small blot clots during this time, some the size of the head of pin, others the size of about 8-10 pins. Always bright red blood, never dark. Basically speaking, it’s been like having a menstrual cycle during pregnancy. Last night, I passed the largest clot I’ve ever seeen in my life, about 1/2″. All this time, limited cramps (nothing to cause me to catch my breath, just a bit of discomfort), and not soaking a padliner within a few hours. Just always bleeding. Its been over the holidays, and there has been little anyone can do but wait. I am starting to feel this is a drawn out miscarriage; what are your thoughts? I will be seeing the OBGYN in the next 2 days. Thanks. No, I’m not panicking as there is little I can do but wait as well. Which does stink. Thanks.

I am 23 years old-my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for a little over a year. I found out I had endometriosis over the summer and had a laparoscopy done in September. My periods were always very heavy with horrible cramps and even quarter sized (and larger) blood clots. After my surgery, I had two “normal” periods (one within 1 week of my lap). The pain was less severe than before and the flow was not as heavy. This month, I was about 5 days late. I had a re-scheduled post-op appointment with my GYNO so I went ahead and took a pregnancy test that morning just in case (since I was going to be there anyway). To my excitement and surprise, it came back with a faint positive. I went ahead to work but by 9:45am, I started bleeding (was a dull red/pink color). I got really upset but went to my doctors appt. with high hopes anyway. My doctor was thrilled that I had even gotten a positive test and sent me to have a blood test done. I called the next morning and they said that it was positive but very low-meaning either a VERY early pregnancy and my levels weren’t high enough to prevent bleeding or an early miscarriage. I was still pretty disappointed but am trying to keep a good mind about it. I prepared myself for a miscarriage but it doesn’t really seem like one (a bad one at least). The first day I started I was simply wadding up toilet paper (had no pad with me) and changing it ever couple hours. The next day was about the same-wore a panty liner and got through most of the day with just that. The third day I stopped bleeding all together. The fourth day (today) I have some brown discharge that is on my panty liner. The blood/discharge is not that heavy (MUCH lighter than my normal period) and there are little to no cramps. I started having cramps about 1 week before my period was supposed to be due but they were very minimal. I had prepared myself for a miscarriage but now I can’t but wondering if I am one of the few that simply has a “cycle” while I’m pregnant-especially if I got pregnant later in my cycle. Any thoughts-my doctor is going to be out of town the rest of the week so I can’t see him again until next Thursday (9 days after my appt). It’s killing me to wait this long to know if I’m still pregnant. Should I just prepare for the worst and hope for the best or am I hoping for nothing?

  Katie wrote @ December 4, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Also, I had nausea for days before my test. The nausea disappeared while I was bleeding but returned today (minimal though)-also my breasts are SLIGHTLY sore on the sides-could just be coincidence though.

I had an ultrasound last week that showed what the dr said was an ABnormally Large Yolk sac with a fetal pole measuring 5 wks 5days. I was 8 weeks pregnant at the time. there was no heartbeat. He sent me home telling me that it was 50 50 chance of miscarriage. 5 days later i have had mild cramping and two cases of brown discharge when wiping and one small trace of red blood. If this is a miscarriage, then when will it be over. Most of the time when I wipe its clear and the cramps are not consistent. My dates are not off and I should measure 8 weeks. Please advise on the time it takes to be done with this as the waiting game is killing me and my husband. How often do you hear of this happening and a miscarriage is misdiagnosed? Thanks in advance for your time as we are emotionally disturbed by this information from our dr. Please dont sugar coat anything I need the facts so I can process this. Thanks again. You are really doing a great thing here by helping folks.

  Deanna wrote @ December 6, 2009 at 11:19 pm

I’m going to add a reply here as well as my private one about the abnormally large yolk sac, since it is not currently covered on my site.

A normal yolk sac measures between 5 and 5.5mm. A yolk sac gets too large if the baby is not taking any nutrients from it, which usually means the baby has died. If the sac is between 5.5 and 8 mm, the rate of miscarriage is very high, but a small number will go on normally. If it is larger than 8mm, then the pregnancy is almost certainly a blighted ovum or a genetic miscarriage.

I went to the hospital yesterday as i was concerned being my first pregnancy. when i had the initial blood tests to find out if i was pregnant the first one came back equilateral and the 2nd one came back possitive. On tuesday the 8th i had all the initial blood tests done for the hospital and got a mid wife letter. To me it sounds like my hormons arent high enough at the moment to stop my period. I also have my period when i was 2weeks pregnant.
But mum got her period as normal for the first 4months of being pregnant with my 2 brothers and myself, my sister ws went to be a miscarrage that didnt happen..
I dont know what to think about all this. do you have any idea’s?

hi, i have done pregnancy test at the doctor when i was 5 weeks, im now 14/15 weeks and woke up during the night with cramps, then went to the toilet to find i had started bleeding. It was dark red in colour and lasted a couple of hours, and then it turned like an off brown colour, what does this mean?? am i still pregnant or miscarriged??

This one month, I missed 5 days of my birth control pills, so I went and got plan B. I was 2 weeks late for my expected period and 3 pregnancy tests confirmed that I was pregnant. My doctor confirmed I was pregnant. I was staying healthy for the next 3 weeks, but at 3am my husband had to call an EMS because of a sudden severe onset of pain in my abdomen. 2 hours after the pain started to subside a dark red clot the size of a quarter came out of me. After this clot passed, I had about a day of light pink spotting. Hospital staff took tests and sent me home with out answers. I went back to doctors who said I am not pregnant. I have had 2 periods since which change from light pink to dark red clots to light pink flow. What shall I do? This is not a normal period for me and doctors are not listening to me.

I had a miscarriage @ 7 weeks about a month and a half ago. This last week, I started what I thought was my first period since the miscarriage. It began very light and pink for the first 3 days but the last 2 have been very clotty with heavy flow and severe cramping. Is this ‘leftover’ from the miscarriage? Twins? I feel like I’m repeating the same thing.

This site helped calm my fears! My mother has a history of miscarriages and Im just very scared that it could happen to me. Im 12 weeks and praying every single day that everything is okay. Im only 18 and the doctor said everything looked normal, but I cant help but worry, This is probably crazy, but I’ve had nightmares about it. Since Im out of my first trimester is it likely that I will miscarry?

Hi I’m 10 weeks 3 days pregnant. My only symptom of pregnancy was very sore and full breast. At 7 1/2 weeks my breast were not sore or full anymore. I called my OB’s office many times and the nurses keep telling me its normal, not to worry as long as I’m not bleeding or cramping. Well I read about missed miscarriage and I’m very nervous. So my breast have not been sore in 3 weeks. My next u/s is Jan 4. I don’t know if I should prepare myself for bad news or is this really normal and has it happened to anyone else.

Hi. I am 16 years old and I believe I am pregnant. Me and my soon to be husband have already been trying to have a baby and have been unsucessful for several months but I think this time I am pregnant but am scared. I have been having brown discharge for a couple days and started bleeding slightly this afternoon but nothing heavy at all. I’m very scared I am miscarrying. We’ve just been disappointed and are hoping this time it works out. Am I worrying too much? Am I actually too young and my body is rejecting the pregnancy everytime?

hello everyone my names michelle and im 21 years old me and my bf have been trying to have a baby for abt 9 months now and everytime i wud take a test it would come out negative or i wud get my period when expected so i knew i wasnt preg.aftter a while i sarted thinking either something is wrong with me or my bf.around nov 29 or so i had my period and didnt get it the month of december no signs or sypmtoms of even getting it other than my breast were sensitive and they felt bigger so i figured i was just getting my period late, anyhow i ended up taking a preg. test on sunday 1/3/10 just to be sure and it came out positive but one of the blue lines was light like a faded type thing but it was very clear either way it was positive so i took it as im pregnant i was very excited because 9 months of trying and finally my wish came true so i go to the clinic the next morning and they did the urine test and again the blue line was bearly showing so the nurse did it again and the second one was the same so she told me yes im pregnant because if iwasnt those lines wouldnt show up at all so thats 3 positive tests that i took so the nurse told me to start on prenatal care and that based on my lmp im about 5 weeks preg.so that same night i go to the br to urinate and when i wiped i noticed blood but very light and not so much of it either way i panicked because i didnt think that was normal so i told my bf right away and he told me that some girls spot and so on and that its normal and not to worry or stress out abt it,but i still couldnt get it off my mind.so this morning at abt 1030 or so i got to the br and when i wiped the bleeding was more than the night before it was as if i was getting my period it wasnt heavy at all and i didnt feel any pain or cramping either way i was told to go the er and get that checked out so me n my bf rush to the nearest er and the dr came in checked if i had any blood clots or anything inside my vagina but he didnt see ne or at least he didnt tell me he did so i figured thats a good thing then i get an ultra sound to measure my pelvis and the ultrasound tech told me it was normal and that she doesnt think i have anything to worry abt so that calmed me down a lot, they also did blood work to check for the hcg.i waited for wat seemed like an eternity and finally the dr comes in and tells me thast it looks like it was a miscarriage but he wasnt suree,he said my hcg was at 6 and at 5 weeks it shud b alot higher.after i heard the word miscarriage i just blanked out and stopped listening its the worst feeling ever!anyway the dr told me to go back in 2 to 3 days to do the hcg test again to make sure that it was a miscarriage cuz itt cud b that im not 5 weeks that i may just bearly b one or two weeks either way im scared and sad .i can only hope that i really didnt have a misscarriage and that the dr is right abt how far along i really am.my bf is staying positive and is really being there for me because he srtongly feels that i did just bearly get pregnant and thats y the preg tests were so light and it says that at 1 week the hcg shud b at 5-50 so thats somewhat good news and makes me feel alot better i can only hope that i still am pregnant.ill find out in a few days.im still bleeding once again it just seems that im on my period the bleeding isnt heavy or unusual im not in any pain im just laying down to rest and im going to take it easy for the next few days i only hope that im pregnant still.so if u can pls let me kno what u think i wud really appreciate it in other words i need a second opinion.i dnt have ins so im going to fill out the application for medi-cal to see if i qualify and so i can see an actual gynecologist and see what he or she tells me.if worst comes to worst and it ends up being that i did have a miscarriage, when i can start trying to get pregnant again???i hope to hear from u soon.to all u ladies that are going through the same worries or who have had miscarriages, god bless u all u r not alone but dont lose hope everything happens for a reason or for no reason at all these things just happen and are happenning everyday its very sad and its the hardest thing to deal with.i wish u all the best of luck in the future stay positive.Once again god bless u all tonight and from now on ill be praying for each and everyone of you!!!Goodnight:)

Im 5 weeks pregnant as of today.
i’ve had my normal cramping for the past week and a half. earlier today i was laying down, and i started to feel naseus so i went to the bathroom and went pee and when i wiped i noticed a little bit of pink blood on the toilet paper, so i put on a pad. i’ve been going to the bathroom atleast ever 15 minutes to check cuz im so scared of bleeding a lot and having a miscarraige. but there hasnt been a lot of blood. theres never any blood on the pad but when i wipe and apply pressure there’s a little brown blood on the toilet paper. is it possible that its nothing? or is it most likely a miscarraige?

thankyou

I am 27. I have had endometriosis since I was 19. I have had to laparscopic surgeries to try and remove adhesions and other problems with endo. I have had less and less symptoms over the last 6 years thanks to high doses of birth control. I was married in June. I decided to go off my birth control in March of 09. My husband and I have been trying since then to get pregnant. My doctor has told me for 6 years to get pregnant but we were not married yet and were not financially stable. Well NOW we are.
I am scheduled to have a laparscopic HSG with exploration in 8 days. I am a week late with my period. I have taken 6 pregnancy tests. Two of which were positive, however faint lines. I have had breast tenderness for over 3 weeks. Two days ago I started having cramping more so on the left side.
Could I be having an ectopic pregnancy? My twin sister has had one and three miscarriages. I am very worried that I might not ever have children of my own.

  Deanna wrote @ January 17, 2010 at 4:09 pm

I’m going to go ahead and post my response to Jill publicly, since it is so important to know what to do when there is a history and signs of an ectopic:

With your family history, the endo and surgeries, and the pregnancy tests that come and go as positive, you are in a high-risk category for ectopic. You are not in any danger right now at 5 weeks pregnant, but definitely go to the hospital if you get strong cramps, pain in your shoulder, or abdominal pain, or a fever. DEFINITELY call your doctor the moment the office opens to be assessed and make sure this is not the case. If it is, you should be plenty early enough to do a non-surgical intervention that preserves your tubes without scarring.

Hang in there. I know it’s scary. Let me know how you are.

Hi,
I am 28 years old and about a week ago I had what I thought was just a longer than usual period. By day 7 (even though typically mine last for 3-4 days) I got nervous and took a home pregnancy test. It came out positive. I took 3 more urine tests, and a blood test and they also came out positive, but since then I have experienced more bleeding and mild cramping. The bleeding has not been consistent but is heavier than ‘spotting’ as I have been changing pads every 4-5 hours. The nurse at the urgent care clinic I went to calculated that I could be 2 weeks along and another said perhaps 6 weeks according to my LMP. I’ve had virtually no symptoms aside from bloating and breast tenderness which have both went away. I’m concerned that I may have miscarried. How long after a miscarriage will a pregnancy test show positive results? Is there a standard length of time for a miscarriage? I am not scheduled for an ultrasound for another 2 weeks but my nerves are going crazy.

hi deanna, thank you for this site. It’s been comforting. I had a positive hcg test a week ago and i should be in my week 5 now. However, 3 days ago i had a brownish blood discharge which progressed to intermittent gushes of reddish blood like 2ce or 3ce a day for abt 3days now but not enough to soak up a pad-jst my liners. My gyn placed me on duphaston from d day i first saw d brownish bld. I’ve been off work n on bed rest for 3 days now. I’ve also experienced mild cramping in my lower abd from just before my missed period. The only other preg symptom i had was d tender breasts which has significantly reduced now.
I was quite concerned till i read ur w/site. I’ve been praying n talking to my body. Though i’ve come to terms wit d worst case scenario. Been attempting conception for abt 15mths now. I’m still hopeful, though.
What dyou think?

HI! Im a 26 year old Mother of 4 children and found out 2 weeks ago were going to have number 5! We were very excitred about this as my husband has no children of his own & we weren’t sure he could have kids! This last sat I felt a “gush” thinking it was maybe discharge I didn’t worry to much. After a trip to the rest room I discovered there was bllod. Not alot but there was a clot! I freaked rushed to E.R. and didn’t get many answers. They did do a hcg level and said come back for another! Here it is almost a week later & after all the testing I still don’t know for sure if my baby is ok or not! Ive come to belive(maybe just calming myself) but after being told I have a U.T.I. today I think I may actually have a kidney infection and thats what the pain has been all along! What ever happened with starting with a urine test first??? Maybe Im wrong but I sure hope not!

I am 9 weeks preganant and over the last week my pregnancy symptoms have slowly went away. My boobs are slightly sore but other than that my energy seems to have come back for the most part and I am barely nauseous and just don’t FEEL pregnant. I had some stretching pain several days ago but not in the past few days. I know this can be “normal” but is also listed as a sign of miscarriage. The heartbeat of the baby at 6 w 5 days was 129 which the doc said was fine but seems lowish to me. I also feel the scan was off by about 3-5 days as I know when I could have potentially conceived. I am such a paranoid pregnant person and I know this but do I have any reason to be concerned. I should add in that my 2 year old got a good kick by accident to my stomach about a week ago when this all started but I read this should not have caused any issues.

I am 21 almost 22 yrs old. I got diagnosed with endometriosis a little over a year ago. they told me it will be hard to conceive. My bf and I have unprotected sex but I am on birth control for my endo. my periods have been regular, but last wed (01-20-10) I started spotting but it was like brown, old blood? Anyways, before that I started getting crampy, fatigued, going to the bathroom every 30 min, bloated, and unbelievably hungry. Today my bf & I had sex and when I went to the bathroom I noticed brown clumpy stuff? I am really confused, any advice?

  marissâ wrote @ January 24, 2010 at 10:25 pm

  Genna wrote @ January 28, 2010 at 11:49 pm

The last time I had sex was in October (’09). I’m on birth-control, and usually use a condom. Since October, I’ve gotten my period with the pill-no problems, nothing unusual. Then this month, (Jan) I got my period 4 days earlier than I was suppose to and it hasn’t stopped. I’ve had it for almost 9 days now. And it’s heavy, there is discharge, which isn’t uncommon with me, but there’s a lot of it, and a lot painful cramping. I’ve gained some weight; the pregnancy test I took was negative, though I can’t help but think it was a miscarriage. Do you think it would be a good idea to go to a doctor and just see what’s up? Or should I wait and hold off? I just don’t know what to do.

Hi.
My body is really confusing me right now. I have suffered two past misscariages, the most recent being last March. The first day of my last period was Dec 31, 09. On Jan 14 I started spotting. On the 23 I decided to take a Preg. test and it came back positive. All the while I have not stopped bleeding, and actually the bleeding has gotten heavier, more like a regular period. I’ve gone to see my doctor, he took some blood and says to call if my symptoms change. My next appt is in a few days. It is the 2nd of Feb. and I am still bleeding. I’m going crazy at this point. Any advice?

  Danielle wrote @ February 10, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I was 12 wks along and went to my dr appt on Monday (2-8-10) and was supposed to hear the heartbeat for the first time. The dr couldn’t find it so he sent us to get an ultrasound. The tech looked and looked and couldn’t find the baby. We were able to see the sac and the yolk sac … empty. She measured it to be 6 wks and 6 days. The dr says I could have been farther along and it could be shrinking to be passed naturally. I never bled so I didn’t have a miscarriage. He checked my levels and I’m still pregnant for some reason. I asked if it could be ectopic and he said no because of the sac. It’s so upsetting that my body won’t recognize that I’m not pregnant anymore and let me start trying again. I go in Friday for a D&C because I don’t know when I’m going to pass it. Like I said before, I’m so upset that this happened to be, especially it being the first, and I’m grieving the loss because I’ve made it this far chemically and thinking there’s something growing. Should I really get this D&C done or wait for it to pass on it’s own. Also, when can I start trying again? We are already in the mind set of being pregnant, why not try again?

Hi I’m 38 years old. Last year in Aug I had a miscarrage – the baby stopped growing when he is 5 weeks old. I didn’t know and carried it till 8 weeks when I finally see a doc. Gone through an operation and cried a bucket. This month my period was late but at about 5 weeks I suddenly have red blood spots (when I wiped). Then nothing else. i really fear that I had miscarriage. I haven’t done any preg test and have move my appt with Dr to this week (it was supposed to be a review of my operation done last Aug). Now I’m worried sick.

I was 7 weeks and 5 days when I was scheduled to go in and see the baby’s heartbeat (vaginal sonogram) on 2/10/10, my dr couldn’t find it so he scheduled me 1 wk in exact on 2/17/10 (yesterday) I was 8 weeks and 5 days now, no heartbeat detected. My dr said he was 99% sure that I will miscarry this pregnancy :’( Three years ago I miscarried, I didn’t even know I was pregnant. This is a huge loss for me, I was very excited about becomming a 1st time mommy-to-be. I don’t know how long I should wait, my dr suggested to get my HCG levels tested to confirm it with myself that I wont be removing a live baby when the D&C is done that is scheduled for next wednesday. Should another sonogram be done? Should I get a second opinon? I have no symptoms of a miscarriage, none that I felt when I had my first miscarriage. I notice that my pregnancy symptoms have faded, but I don’t want to be making a mistake, Drs have been known to misdiagnose a miscarriage. I’ve heard you can try to listen to the heartbeat? My dr has never tried that, should I request for that? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello,
I recently found out i am 6 weeks pregnant. I am worried because i have random period cramps that occur and then disappear. And i also get quite a sore lower back and my stomach feels like its got very mild period pain the whole time (achy). And it feels like sharp pains shoot through my overies from time to time. Is this an early symptom of miscarrage?

Hi Deanna, Here is my story … My Lmp was on Dec 19/09. Today I went for an ultrasound today (3/3/10). According to my dates I am 10 weeks pregnant today and the ultrasound tech told me that I am measuring about 6 weeks . (I had a transvaginal) Doctor could not find a heart beat. She said that I could possibly have a misscariage in the next few days. The baby might of stopped growing at 6 weeks or I’m not that far along. I have another ultrasound scheduled for Monday, 3/08/10
A part of me thinks that the baby died and stopped growing at 6 weeks and my body hasn’t recognised it yet. I want to be hopeful and believe everything is okay but…
My Doctor doesn’t seem worried and seems to think I merely miscalculated my dates. I’m trying to stay calm and think positive but not understanding what is happening is killing me. Do you have any advice? Thank you!!!! ~ Claudia

How did your u/s today go?

My last period started on December 10th and ended about 5 days after that. I have not had a period since. There were a few days in late January where i had very dark brown spotting. I was hoping I would soon start my period after that, but still nothing came. Lately my breasts have been very tender and swollen, which although I know this is a PMS symptom, it has never lasted quite this long. I’ve been dizzy lately and nauseous.
I’ve also taken numerous pregnancy tests and each time they read negative.
Most of the people I’ve spoken with, (friends and colleagues) have told me not to worry and it is most likely just stress, or due to the fact that I am very skinny and hypoglycemic, but I’m still not sure.
The past few days I’ve been getting sharp pains deep in my lower abdomen. They come and go fairly quickly though so I passed it off as nothing.
Then today I went to the restroom and when I wiped I saw very very bright red blood, unlike any period blood I have ever had. Now I’m having excruciating cramping and spotting, but not nearly enough to fill a tampon.
I’ve been researching and it sounds as if I am having a miscarriage. How can this be if I had several negative results on pregnancy tests?

  Pam wrote @ March 14, 2010 at 9:48 am

Deanna,
can you post a publis reply to this? I have seen several posts with the same situation.
I am about 10 weeks and 3 days ago all of my pregnancy symptoms stopped. I do not feel bloated, no more soreness in breasts, my appetite is growing. I feel completely normal again. At 8 weeks I had an ultrasound, babys heartbeat at 160. Is this
more normal or more likely a symptom of miscarriage?

  Mason wrote @ March 14, 2010 at 6:15 pm

My Fiance is about 5 weeks or so, you can tell her stomach is bigger, her breasts aren’t as sensitive as they were, one still is sensitive. The other is kinda fading. She started seeing a bright red blood with clots, not too much blood though, we did have intercourse before all of this started. I was wondering if it is just because the cervix is filled with blood and we hit it and that is how it started bleeding or what happened there, but then how can there be clots? Is that just the body healing itself from us having intercourse? Thank you for your time.

  Sarah wrote @ March 16, 2010 at 1:22 am

Deanna,
I’m not sure what to think of this month’s cycle. My breasts started hurting about 2 weeks prior to my period being due. They usually are sore about a week before but they were severly painful just thought it was going to be a rough period this month. On top of that I had started wanting foods that I normally can’t stand and just thought just my body being wierd. I was gettin sick alot especially when I ate and had an elevated temp since about the same time my breasts started hurting and wildly vivid dreams. With that I assumed the flu but it should be over by now. My period came but with absolutely no pain, was somewhat lighter in flow and darker than normal. No clots which I always have clots. I forgot I even had it. I didn’t bloat or feel miserable which usually with the strong symptoms I know it’s going to be rough and I’m very sensitive to the hormone changes. I can’t take birth control because of it making me sick. The last time I tried I lost 20lbs in less than 4 weeks and was sick for 5 weeks when it finally worked it;s way out of my system. My period came and ended but I’m still getting sick and feeling slght cramps. Also, still having food cravings and now they’re just plain grossing people out. I thought all these signs would have left when my period started and my hormones leveled back out again but now I’m slightly concerned. My boyfriend thought I was pregnant and has been out of town and I didn’t think to tell him I got my period because it’s expected every month anyways and he was assuming I was pregnant still today. I was thinkin that even if I had been and had a miscarriage these symptoms should have stopped by now. My period came a week ago and all the normal symptoms usually end on the 1st or 2nd day of my period. My breasts aren’t painful like they were but ache a little at times and are super sensitive. I just don’t really know because this has never happened to me before. If you can explain anything to me I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

Pam, here is your public reply! (I don’t reply to them all here on the site or there would be thousands of them, and many answers are covered, even if they are hard to find!)

It is very normal to lose your symptoms between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is the point at which the placenta takes over the hormone production. It heralds the beginning of the middle, and easy part, of most pregnancies as hormone prodution evens out.

Hello
I had a threatened misscarriage with my son who is now a healthy nine year old, last year I had a misscarriage at 8 weeks on christmas eve. I am now 5 weeks pregnant again but this time I have no pregnancy symptoms at all. With both my previous pregnancies I had sore breasts before I even knew I was pregnant but this time I have nothing at all. Could this be a sign of an impending misscarriage ? I am so worried, I really don’t know how I could cope with another misscarriage.
Any information would be appreciated.

I have a question for those who can answer! I just got my pd on March 21.2010, and lasted 5 days. Then for the nxt 6 days there was nothing wrong but 3 out of those 6 days i stared having lower back sharp pains and a lotof cramps. Then on april the 1st I starded bleeding again. It was’nt a heavy bleeding. So the nxt morning as I got up Ifelt a big gulsh of blood come out. I rushed to the restroom and yes mypad got filled up quite fast. I could see something kinda brownish, redish. So I went to the dosctor’s office, and they didnt do anything. No pregnancy test, just asked me if it burned when I went to pee. So they said I had a urenary tract infecction thats all they said.. So any comments, does anyone think it could have been a miscarage?/ Cause I think it was…

Hi-
I am probably no more than 8 weeks along. I developed severe cramping today and bled for about an hour. The blood was bright red and there was a lot of clotting. My cramps felt exactly as they did when I was in labor with my son, which was mostly lower back pain. I have an appt scheduled for Friday, but I am wondering if I should bump it up to tomorrow or as early as I can get in. If I miscarried do I need to have a D & C? What exactly is a D & C? I’ve had a couple friends who have miscarried but they were much further along. I do still have some cramping, but no more bleeding. I had been spotting for the last 3-4 days leading up to this as well. My prior pregnancy was completely normal and healthy so I am worried with this. Thanks!

Hi. I am 8 weeks pregnant and woke up Thursday AM to some spotting. Went to the doctor later that day and had a sonogram. Doctor said everything looked good and we got to see the baby’s heartbeat, which the US tech said was very difficult to find at this time yet. Since then I had more spotting Friday night, Saturday morning, and a little heavier spotting Saturday night. I keep reading that sometimes you shed blood at about the time you would have gotten your period, but is this safe for the baby and will he/she be okay?

please help me. I found out 2weeks ago i was pregnant. Took 3tests all positive. But a week before that 1 was negative. I went to the hospital about a week ago wil period like pains. They did an internal scan but didnt see anythin and said it could be too early to see anything0at all. They also took my blood to test my hormoan level and it said it was early pregancy and have to come back in 2weeks. The day they did an enternal scan i started bleedin only when wiping but it was red this has carried on. But yesterday it got heavy i say the bleedin is exactly like a period red and stringy like wit period pains. A normal pad can last a whole day. Is ther any hope at all as my boyfriend has not givin up yet as ther has not been big clots. The doctors cant do anything untill i get my blood test again. Is there any hope at all? As i have heard you can still be pregnant with there symptoms.

Ok well I found out last Thursday that I was about 5 weeks. I’ve always had an uncomfortable feeling in my tummy, no pain though. Friday evening I hade some light spotting. Nothing on sat Or Sunday. But Monday morning I started bleeding really heavy and have had quite a few big clots. There’s not that much blood it’s just really thick red blood. (if that even makes sense) maybe filling a pad as a normal period would. Having very mild cramping. I’m now thinking that I have misscaried. What do you think? I’m not thy sure as this was my first pregnancy. Had my first blood test taken on Monday, going to get my second kne tommorow. I’m really worried! I hope it’s not! Has anyone experienced similar but still had the baby?

I just found out a few weeks ago that I am pregnant. It was definitely a surprise but not unwelcome. Last night my lower abdomen was cramping and there was a bit of brown discharge when I wiped. Today the cramping is a lot worse and the bleeding is heavier. I don’t have insurance and don’t want to go to the hospital if there is nothing they can do. I guess I want to really know is when should I go to the doctor. I don’t want to go too early if there is nothing they can do, but I don’t want to not go if I should. I really need some advice. I’m worried and don’t know what to tell my fiance. He’s so worried and loves me so much. I think I’m losing it (my mind and the baby).

4 days ago I started to experience mild cramping and it lasted for about a day and a half. I took an early pregnancy test(5days before my missed period) yesterday and it came up negative. But then today I started experiencing light red bleeding. Do you think I’m having a miscarriage?

I am having a similar issue as Kristen. I am approximately 8 weeks and went into the ER for abdominal pain that turned out to be a UTI. They did an ultrasound and said I was measuring 7 weeks but she said she couldn’t find a heartbeat. I am still having all my pregnancy symptoms, I’m not bleeding or cramping. What does this mean?

  megan wrote @ April 24, 2010 at 2:23 pm

im 17 and pregnant with my first baby. im not sure how far along yet. but goin by my last ultrasound they said 5-6 weeks. well a few days ago i started bleeding very lightly i went to the hospital and they couldn’t find the baby on the ultrasound and my hormon leavels was low. the dr said that i could be too early for them to see anything and just getting my last period out or i am having a misscarraige; they made me come back today for more blood work and another ultrasound they are telling me the samething i am really worried and dont wanna loose my baby. i am still bleeding but my breast are still sore and i have symptoms of pregnancy. does anyone have an answer for me? i really could use the help. i dont wanna worry myself too much because i know its bad for the baby.

I am 5w2d pregnant. I knew I was pregnant way before – even to a HPT. I have had 3 previous miscarriages all very different. I knew – was pregnant this time because of breat tenderness, nausea, fatique etc. But with intense cramping the entire time. I went to the ER two days ago for the constant severe (worse than period) cramping and lower back pain. The did a vaginal ultrasound and said there was nothing to see but that could be normal at 5 weeks. My hcg lvl was 1130. The cramping is still bad but I’m not spotting. My other pregnancy symptoms have all but dissapeared. do you have any advice? Thanks so much.

im 15 years old and my periods sometimes regular, well my bf and i had foreplay about 2 days before my period somtimes gets here but we didnt get any sperm on me (or so we think) well my period still hasnt came and its been about 12 days late… i have not tenderness, not morning sickness but i had really bad allergies last weeks so i didnt know if my sickness last week halted my period or what. but today i woke up with really dark brown discharge and then its slowed down then when i got to school about 3 hours later it was rlly heavy with blood then it sloed then i filled a pad then stopped again whats wrong? am i pregnant? or is this normal for teens?

  Shannon O’Neal wrote @ May 9, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Thank you for this information. I would like to add that if your blood type is rh negative, you should contact your doctor at the first sight of spotting. It’s important for rh negative women to receive a rhogam shot within 72 hours of vaginal bleeding as a precaution against Rh incompatibility, which could affect future pregnancies.

She kept saying the growth was slow and the beta levels low. this last friday the beta levels dropped and she called us in for ultrasound that showed no fetal heartbeat. said i was miscarrying. am wondering when the cramping and bleeding will start, i feel no different with no bleeding currently. I do not want to do another d and c with this one.

Hey, I’m 16 years old and found out I am pregnant a few days ago, everything was fine, alot of symptoms of a healthy pregnancy, however I came back from a camping trip and saw there was blood, bright red with few clots. I was so scared, and still am, but I took a clear blue test and it said I was still pregnant. A day after the blood was still there covering a pad in like 5 hours, I did have cramping and back pain yesterday but it’s died down. I phoned my doctor and told him everything that was going on, he said I am having a threatened misscariage, I’m going to get an ultrasound tomorrow to see what on earth is going on. Any advice? x

This is my first pregnancy and I has a small spot of blood on my panties while I was at work and then just a little more and it was a burnt brown look.I am 5 weeks and I went to the er that night and was given a pelvic exam and pelvic was closed.my hcg level was 25000 and dr said that was good and they saw in a ultra-sound I have a cyst on my right ovary.when they did the transvaginal they saw baby and got a heartbeat. The heart rate was 93 and is that normal.I was to follow up with my ob dr and did in 2 days.when i went to him I had my results with me and was in hopes he would do more test but he did not.i was very upset that he did not check levels to see if my hcg was going up.A er dr told me the heartbeat should be higher but I have read that at 5 weeks the beat should not be below 90.I have not had any bleeding since that nigh and I have sore boobs and still have morning sickness every now and then but the dr at the er scared me and do you think I am at risk of mc.My mother had spotting with my siblings and she has 3 kids but no complications and we were all healthy. What is your opinion on why I did spot very little and is heart rate something for me to worry about.my dr told me today he was not going to do anything until 2 more weeks.I hate waiting until then to get some answers.

thank you,candace

Hi there I am six weeks pregnant and have been having very light brown spotting for over a week. My breasts are still tender and I am having slight period pain every now and then. I am having my second blood test in three days to compare my hcg levels. I have had one previous miscarriage inwhich I had a d&c about four months ago. I also have the genital warts virus! Do you think This is having anything to do with my symptoms? I’m going to lose this one as well?

hi, i am supose to be about 5-6weeks preganat and i started bleeding lite(brown) and some cramping and on back pain not yet. I went to the doctor and had a ultra-sound and they told me that there is a sack but there is nothing in it, so he told me to return in 4days to see if there is any change. But what i wont to know what do that mean? why is there noting in the sack? is the baby dead and passed and i don’t no it? I’m so scared.

  Deanna wrote @ May 29, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Brenda, my email to you bounced. I’ll reply publicly.

If you have both brown bleeding and a sonogram that is not showing a baby, the odds are very likely that this is a missed miscarriage, a condition medically called a blighted ovum. In this case, the baby
never develops, but only the sac. It is not caused by anything you did, nor is it something that could be prevented or treated. It is just a genetic error where the cells did not divide correctly.

Now, I will say that at 5 weeks, it’s possible it is just too early to see the fetal pole within the sac. But if you are having brown bleeding too, that suggests that your hormone levels are also low, and the body
is slowly recognizing what has happened.

The best we can hope for is that the bleeding stops, and that at your next sonogram they do see a baby growing. The odds are about 60% that this will happen. Let me know how you are doing. It’s going to be a
rough few days. Just do the best you can

I am 5 weeks preg. This morning I had cramps almost like light contractions. This is our second preg however my first had to be induced at around 22weeks. I’m not bleeding but urinating about 4 times each hour no bleeding I layed in bed for a few hours fell asleep and the pain has since subsided is this a possible misscariage? I’m still feeling nausea and dizyness . When I get up I do have some light and slight cramping

I’m 20 years old and found out i was pregnant almost a week and a 1/2 ago .. worried that i maybe miscarrying (please tell me if i am).. I live in a Muslim country so there is a risk of me going to jail if i go see a doctor because i am unmarried. Yesterday i spotted pink and brown with dull pain … but much later in the day it became red .. now this morning its red gooey and there was a lot of it with little tissue matter, and the soreness from my breast was gone (but later returned)… Maybe because i was laying down and it collected ? there was nothing on my panties just went to the bathroom and it all came out .. there isn’t enough to fill a pad .. Advice/ Knowledge of miscarrying is greatly appreciated as i am in a tight situation .

Deanna, I think this site is fantastic. Put me at a little ease but encouraged me to write a question. Hope you find the time to respond even thought my sister and husband said “stop reading all that stuff on the internet.”

I’m 5 weeks, well, 5 1/2. First pregnancy and a little worried about all the horrible things that can happen. The things I am worried about are the pains and spotting. I have had random pains throughout my stomach and abdomon. Not severe pains, they are minor, they come and go. I know that you say cramps are normal and you will have them throughout… but these aren’t quite like cramps. Sort of like how it feels when you drink too much water… or have gas. Behind my belly button area, and above and to the side, lol… I’m sure it is normal but then I wiped and saw red blood. Only once. It’s was a light red. The next day I noticed some brown discharge throughout the day getting lighter and lighter. Still trying not to worry but broke into tears in my husbands arms…

Today I noticed it is getting pink again. Seems to get this way when I have a bowl movement. It’s not dark red, or chunky, but the cramps (if you would call them cramps) have been there the whole time for the most part. I can still function normally, and yes, resting does help. I get a little sharp pain to the right when I stand up quickly.

I am afraid of an ectopic pregnancy. I haven’t called the doc yet. I keep telling myself it’s fine. And hubby says not to worry, no stress!

Any thoughts?
Thanks for your time, keep doing what you are doing!

So I am 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant…I have experienced a chemical miscarriage last month.
Last month I had taken 3 pregnancy tests which all came back positive, but very faint. I tested a week before my missed period and by the time my period was due I recieved it and also made me want to take another pregnancy test. It was negative. My periods are crazy and last 4 days…I knew I had to have been pregnant and had a miscarriage because it lasted 7 days.

Anyways on to what is really bothering me.
Yesterday I was getting ready for work about 9:30am and experienced bad cramping. It only lasted for 10 minutes and I knew this wouldn’t come out to being okay, I was so upset about my last c/m and knew I would start bleeding…that’s how bad it hurt so I brought some pads with me. The day went on and at about 1:00 pm I noticed something wasn’t right in my panties, I checked and there was blood with no clots I was wearing black panties so I couldn’t really tell the color. I put on a pad and checked it through out the day it was red at first and went to brown. It wasn’t much maybe 3 in. long and 1 in. wide streak within 5 hour period. It had stopped, when I went home…I thought it was probably just from having sex the night before…I took a shower and went on with my evening and started to bleed red that went to brown again. I was monitering it quite often and the quantity didn’t change. It wasn’t much, so I went to bed with it on. This morning I checked and it was still the same about 2 in. long and 1/2 in. wide. I am now wearing a new pad and there is nothing. Do you know what this could be? I am hoping the best right now…I never experienced any cramping during the bleeding…only for that 10 minutes yesterday morning.
Thanks so much, your site has helped me with a lot. This is the only site that had all the information I was looking for!
