Symptoms of Miscarriage

On this page you will find four categories of miscarriage symptoms: definite signs of a forthcoming miscarriage, possible signs, signs that might scare you but are really okay, and unusual periods that are not necessarily miscarriages.

——————————————————-

Definite Signs of a Miscarriage

You are having a miscarriage if you have already had a positive pregnancy test, then get these symptoms:

  • Heavy bleeding that soaks a pad in a few hours or less.
  • Strong cramps that make you double over or breathe in a huffy way. Bleeding will usually follow quickly.
  • Passage of tissue, resembling large thick blood clots in the earliest weeks up to pinkish/grayish material, with or without cramps or pain.

A little bit of bleeding without cramping should be okay, but call a doctor. Small darting cramps, even if they hurt, are also okay, usually they just signal the body stretching and pulling to accommodate the growing baby. Lie down and the cramps will usually go away within the hour.

These symptoms can be other things rather than a loss of pregnancy, however, if you are not sure you are pregnant. Check the “I’m not sure I was pregnant” section.

What should you do?

If it is during doctor’s regular working hours, call your regular doctor first. They will give you instructions. If it a night or weekend, first call your regular doctor’s after-hours number. Usually this will be on their answering machine or with their answering service. The nurse or doctor on call who calls you back will help you decide if you need immediate attention or not. Don’t feel like you are bothering them needlessly; this is a natural and expected part of any OB practice. If you can’t get through, don’t have a doctor, and you are afraid, then go to an emergency room.

Be prepared for some possibly insensitive treatment. While some hospitals are well equipped for handling this situation and do a good job, often you are left alone in a room for hours, or told to sit on a toilet and catch tissue, or just sent back home because “there is nothing they can do.” It may be worth the trip, though, if they draw blood for an hCG test or give you a sonogram.

When I began bleeding heavily on an airplane on a Friday afternoon, I still waited until Monday to see my doctor. I did not want some total stranger telling me the baby had died, or to have a sonogram in an emergency room and be told to “call my doctor for the results.” While I was sad about the possible loss of the pregnancy (turns out I lost one of a set of twins at 10 weeks), I was resolved to wait for a comforting, familiar doctor’s office.

There is not really a risk to waiting until Monday or the next morning if you are in your first trimester. There is no magic way to stop an early miscarriage at the hospital. What is going to happen will happen. If you are farther along than 12 weeks, though, and you are merely in labor and not bleeding, then you should take quick action to see if labor can be stopped. If you are passing tissue at home, and it is your first miscarriage, it is not necessary to catch the tissue and take it in. You may do this if you choose, however, and you can store it in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator until you get to a doctor. However, it is rare that tissue caught this way will be usable. Tissue from first miscarriages is rarely tested, since it is assumed your miscarriage was due to a genetic defect. The best way to ensure testable tissue is to have a D&C.

Possible Signs of a Miscarriage

Sometimes, but not always, there may be signs that a miscarriage is pending. None of these things means a miscarriage is certain, but usually you will want additional monitoring if they happen.

Bleeding: Bleeding that starts and stops and starts and stops is often a sign that your hormone levels are falling. While you may still be okay, you need to have your blood hCG pregnancy hormone levels monitored. Heavy bleeding that soaks a pad in an hour is a sign that a miscarriage may be beginning. See the sections on “Definite Signs” for more information on what to do. Keep in mind that while bleeding is always scary, 70% of all pregnancies have bleeding at some point. Both of my normal pregnancies had bleeding, heavy and red. And the one I lost at 20 weeks never even spotted.

Cramping: You are going to feel a lot of random cramping down there the whole pregnancy. The only time cramping is a concern is if you are breathing in a labor-like huff, or if you also begin bleeding with the cramps.

Loss of pregnancy symptoms: This is a question I get all the time. While the complete and sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms can signal a pending miscarriage, usually it is not the first sign. You will have many days where you don’t feel pregnant, when the nausea abates for a day or two, or your breasts are less sore. This is expected and not a concern at all. Around weeks 10 to 14, this is completely normal, as your hormone levels even out and the placenta takes over. The loss of pregnancy symptoms during a miscarriage is usually something you see in hindsight, not ahead of time.

A pregnancy test that fluctuates between positive and negative: If you have tested super early, this is normal. However, if you are a couple weeks in, this could mean an ectopic pregnancy. Often you may also see spotting. If you have taken a pregnancy test that is positive, then another one a few days later that is negative, alert your doctor immediately. You want to rule out an ectopic or take care of it before you have to go the surgical route. If you are taking the tests in the same day, though, you might be right on the edge of a positive result, and urine later in the day may not be concentrated enough to keep the test positive. Test again the next morning to be sure.

You should always call your doctor when you are worried, however; because it is better to call for something that does not turn out to be a problem than to stay up half the night worrying about it.

When You’re Okay

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or you have already been through a loss, one thing we all have in common is worry, worry, worry. This is okay, but remember that 90% of pregnancies end with a squawling baby, regardless of the turmoil the mom has gone through to get there. Here are the most common things you will fret over, and why they are not really a problem.

Bleeding: Small amounts of brown blood (which means it’s old) are expected when the egg implants in the uterus (7-10 days after ovulation) and sometimes at the point when you would have expected your period. You may also bleed slightly after having sex, but this is probably NOT from the baby. Your cervix is soft and filled with blood, so it may bleed a little from sex. This is not considered by many doctors to be a problem, but if it alarms you, call. Up to 70% of all pregnancies have bleeding.

You will be especially scared if you see bright red blood. If you are between 10 and 12 weeks, or if it is a time you would have expected your period, do not panic. Remember that until you are quite far along, much of your uterus is not involved in nourishing the baby, and can bleed with a minor hormone fluctuation. If you are not cramping, call your doctor to let them know, stay lying down on your left side, and hopefully it will slow down, start to turn brown, and eventually stop. If you push the issue, your doctor might schedule a sonogram to put your fears to rest.

When bleeding is a problem: If it is heavy enough to make you change pads or bright red, call your doctor right away. If you begin to have cramps with the bleeding, follow the instructions under “Definite Signs” above.

Cramping: You are going to feel a lot of random cramping down there the whole pregnancy. Most of the time it is caused by the round ligaments expanding to accommodate your growing baby and uterus. If it goes away after a few pains or after you sit down and rest a bit, then you are probably all right. Cramping is a sign you are growing to accommodate the baby and sometimes a sign that you are overdoing it and should rest.

When cramping is a problem: If it continues or gets worse or if you start bleeding too, call your doctor immediately. If you begin to have labor-like breathing or a gush of fluid or blood, follow the instructions under “Definite Signs.”

Inability to eat or keep food down. This is normal! Remember that the baby is the size of a grain of rice and not exactly demanding steak dinners. When the baby starts to need the extra 300 calories a day, you will be eating fine. Just do the best you can with your saltines and soda, and remember that the more severe your morning sickness, the better your hormones are functioning.

Few or no pregnancy symptoms. Not everyone spends each day throwing up or sleeping all the time. Many people have symptoms that are light or nonexistent. This does not mean you will miscarry. Each pregnancy is different, and usually pregnancies after the first will be easier on your body. I had so few pregnancy symptoms the third time around that I actually ordered a margarita at a restaurant before my husband said, “Aren’t you forgetting something?” This never would have happened with Emily, when I spent every non-working hour sleeping or bawling over a migraine.

You should always call your doctor when you are worried, however; because it is better to call for something that does not turn out to be a problem than to stay up half the night worrying about it.

Unusual Periods that Are Not Necessarily Miscarriages

There are many things that can happen in a cycle to make you wonder if you were pregnant and lost a baby, but you never took a test to know for sure. For information on this topic, click on “I’m not sure I was ever pregnant.

  1. Hi,
I am a mom of twins already, and my husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few months now. My period is always spot on, always on the 1st of the month, never late. (Last time I was late, we had twins). Anyway, on the 4th of this month I still had not had my period, I took a few home tests and one was negative, took it first thing in the morning the next day and there was a faint positive line. Went to my docs and got a blood test and my hormone levels were up but not enough to confirm. It is now the 9th and around noon today I started bleeding a bright red. But not a ton. I have been having horrible nausea in the morning the past few days and my appetite is basically gone, as well as breast tenderness and slight cramping pain for the past 8 days…..
Has anyone had this happen? Should I just wait a few days and take another test if the bleeding stops?

  2. i m 10 days late for my period….and foamy white things are coming…….m i pregnent???
    please help me to know…..
it would be a great help!!!
    thank you!!!

  3. I got my period regularly the 4th to 11th. I had sex the 11th, and since that date had brown discharge everyday until the 19th when I began bleeding very heavily and my cramps are so bad I can barely move. I’m experiencing nausea, lack of appetite, and mood swings. I’m worried as I have never had brown discharge or a period one week after another. Do you know what this might be caused from?

  4. Hi, as a concerned woman i found this website and have read plenty of the postings. My concern is that finally after 1year trying to concieve I’m finally pregnant wi Baby #1. My menstrual cycle was to start on the 1/17/2013 (which I didnt). Although on the 11th and 12th I did bleed (bright red). On the 14th I took a pregnacy test and came out positive (faint line). on the 17th i went and took a blood tet which also cam out positive for pregnant. and on the 18th i went into the ER because I’ve been haveing pain and disomfort in my right ovary. All they stated was that it is early pregnacy symptoms and that i am less than 5weeks along. Yesterday 1/21/2013 i had light to dark brown discharge, with some bright red dischrge, and through ot the nigh its been creamy brownish discharge with light pink discharge. My pains are the same: discomfort in myright ovary, at times i feel it real hot and burning, when i lay on my right side- my ovary hurts, i feel like my ovary wants to explode, time to time i get pains in the midle of my stomache, my lower back(it bothers me to stand up straight), when i stand i get tired quickly. and i just wanna stayin bed. So my question is: Am i haveing a Misscariage? whats to expect? What should i do? (my dr. appt isnt for another 2week). Help!!!

  5. i got heavy period and second date i got clot..my period got very less in third day.i dont whether am pregnant r not plz help me!!!

  6. Renee- Your symptoms are concerning to me, as they clearly are to you. I have three kids and one loss (and one confusing cycle now, which is why i’m here) and know how scary the unknown can be. Call your OB in the morning, tell them exactly what’s going on and let them know you’d like to be seen TODAY. Severe pain in your ovary and lower back sounds like more than run of the mill early pregnancy, and they need to take your concern seriously. I’ll keep you (all of you, really) in my thoughts and prayers.

  7. Dear Deanne,

I’m currently 5 weeks pregnant. This morning I woke up with mild cramps and light bleeding which developed into heavy bright red bleeding – not enough to fill a whole pad over a few hours but fills the tissue when wiping. I miscarried in September last year after at 6 weeks and I am feeling desperately scared..my GP has said a reassurance scan can be done in the EPU at 6 weeks at the earliest which is next week and i should rest now but is there anything else I can do till then? Is any of this normal? Please help :)

  8. i am currently 11 weeks pregnant and have started bleeding this morning. it is not enough to fill a pad but is quite a bit when i wipe. I cannot get a Dr’s appointment till next week but should i make the trip to the out of hours GP unit? I have abit of back pain and a bad headache but no pains at the front. Can you help please?

  9. Hi, I’m 28 and have 2 kids ages 6 and 8. I had 2 miscarriages, each very early on at 7 wks before having my 1st child. Hubby and I are trying for a 3rd and we had unprotected sex every day for a wk, all in my fertile days, very hopeful when I was supposed to get my period on the 20th Jan 2013 (last period being the 20th dec 2012) and I missed it. I did have what I thought was implantation bleeding shortly after that, very light and brown discharge that only lasted 2 days when my normal period is red and lasts a wk. Also had all pregnancy symptoms, nausea, headaches, tender breasts etc. Then on the 4th feb 2013, I get what looks like a normal period, had a little more cramping than I usually would, but nothing too bad. Could I have had a miscarriage? Or just a late period? (16 days is enormously late for me) or could I still be pregnant, if I ever was? As I know you can still sometimes bleed when pregnant. Did take at least 6 home preg tests, all were negative. Very confused, PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks

  10. I am 7 weeks pregnant with my first. 2 days ago my husband and I had sex and several hours later I started to bleed. It was bright red (like when you start your period) not alot, no clots, but it was bright red. Almost immediatly it slowed to spotting but the spotting has continued for 2 days and is dark brown. I have no pain, just worries. Any suggestions?

  11. I am 5 + 3 weeks – found out that I was pregnant on Friday…hcg levels were 58000 – they have gone DOWN though yesterday they were 56000- they are not supposed to go down but at least duble over 3 days at this early stage…I am in no pain and is not bleeding – is there any hope at all that everything will be ok?? I have a scan tomorrow …but feel that I am going crazy slowly slowly…

  12. Okay, I had sex about four maybe five weeks ago,
I am on birthcontrol ( implanon)
I started bleeding almost 9 day’s ago it started out light like usual, the. Went to a reddish brown color, after a couple days of that and to now it is bright red and kind of slimmey I mean my periods have that mucous it but this is more than usual I have had mild dull abdominal pains along with lower back pains more near my bottom crack/ tailbone

Since I have birthcontrol I did not think anything of it but, now that I look into it I have had a warm feeling cramping bright red blood and I just don’t feel right,
Along with that I am a mother to a beautiful baby ( almost a year old)
My books have been tender to the touch and I have been feeling odd. Like bubbles in my tummy like I felt with my son. I have also gained 7 pounds….
Is it possible that I was/ am pregnant…
    Or I have lost it?
If you can email me that would be lovely thank you for reading

  13. About a year ago I had a miscarriage. I didn’t have any symptoms of pregnancy or miscarriage except I was nauseated a lot and missed a period. But when I went to the doctor it showed I should have only been 6 weeks and I was really 8. The baby had stopped growing. I was 2 days late so I took a test and it was negative. I spotted a few times do I thought it was my period. But after a week of never actually starting I took two more tests and both positive. My stomachs has cramps and I have lower back pain. But it normally goes away once I lay down. I have gotten nauseated and no food sounds good to me. I get short of breath quickly. Should I be worried about it being another miscarriage? I don’t want to go to the doctor until later. I would be about 6-7 weeks now!

  14. I really need help, would have been 6w/4d pregnant today but was told I miscarried 2 weeks ago! I didn’t believe it so I went for a blood text last week that came back negative, my question is that, is it possible to get a negative blood text and still be pregnant? And I heard some people can miscarry one twin and remain with the other can that show a negative after a miscarriage and also my symptoms went away the 2 days I was bleeding and came back on is it possible to still be pregnant? Plz help!

  15. Hi, I am a 29 year old wife and mother of 1. I am around eight weeks pregnant and everything has been fine. The past 2 days have been the most stressful of my life and tonight I went to the bathroom and had very light pink discharge. Now I am cramping. The symptoms are exactly like starting my period. I really need advice. Please. I’m terrified.

  16. This is very difficult to type but I know discussing it will ease my mind and my broken heart! My bf and I recently found out we were pregnant. YIPPY, I was so overcome with happiness, nervousness, and excitement that I did know what to say nor did I believe it were true. I went on to take 5 more tests in which all 5 were BFP’S! This was not an expected pregnancy but it was my first pregnancy after thinking that something may be wrong with my body because I have never been pregnant before and I am 28y/o. Friday, The day I found out I was pregnant, I was having some minor pink spotting that was only seen on tissue paper after I used the restroom. By that Sunday, I began to bleed very heavily and was so scared I went to the ER where they determined a “threatened miscarriage.” I was told to immediately follow up with my ob/gyn within 2 days of the ER visit. (My HCG levels were 525 and my cervix was still closed at the time of the ER visit). After my ob/gyn appt on Tuesday, my doctor called and told me that my levels had dropped to 95 and to expect a miscarriage if it hadn’t already happened on Sunday. So here I am today….I am having intense cramping (very similiar to heavy period pains) with bleeding so I am thinking that THIS IS IT. My little one is eliminating his/herself and even though I am very disappointed, I am grateful for this opportunity as it shows me that God will allow me to be a mother one day! To all of the women that have experienced a miscarriage, count yourselves blessed because it is some women who have been told that they will never be able to conceive….”For God so loved the world that he gave his ONLY begotten son, that whoSOever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
~DO NOT LOOSE YOUR FAITH…IF WE CONCEIVED ONCE, IT WILL HAPPEN FOR US AGAIN SOON & THIS TIME IT WILL BE PERFECT!

  17. Hi
I am approximately 6.5 weeks pregnant. At 5.5 weeks I experienced severe bloating for a couple of days. Went to toilet and noticed red blood on wiping this stopped. 24 hours later small bleed again, 48 hours v. small bleed that trickled out and yet again stopped. The small bleed has occurred for the last 4 days but only happens at night. The colour is red but not very bright and then subsides to brown and doesn’t last very long and is relatively small amount on a panty liner. Over a few days bloating has gone and in one aspect i feel significantly better. My soreness of breasts has fluctuated over this time however now I feel it has subsided. The bleeding also seems to be a little less each day. Due to my history I have a scan booked for at 8 weeks, our hospital will not scan any earlier. I have been told by midwife it is a threatened miscarriage.

My history I have had 2 miscarriages and a neonatal death ( this was due to placenta problems resulting in baby being small for gestation and developing gestational hypertension then pre eclampsia). And have been trying for 5 years, i am now almost 37. As you can appreciate I’m anxious and need advise on how to proceed.

  18. Hello everyone,
Really stressed out, I’m 12wks since tues but have been in hosp 8 times so far with heavy bleeds. I lost a baby last oct at 13wks so this time round I can’t help but worry. At the EPU at an internal scan a haematoma was found near the pregnancy sac. Docs said this should bleed out and they will monitor the size of it. They also said not to worry that clots like these were mostly harmless. No other info was offered and I left still not knowing anything in detail. I also found out after my m/c I have hypothyroidism which still isn’t balanced. I’ve since done some research about the clot but am still very worried doctors never said that these clots can be harmful and can cause miscarriages. I am happy I’m pregnant but il only rest when I get to hold my baby in sept when I’m due. It’s the not knowing and what ifs that are so scary. If anyone has any similar stories or is going through the same thing I would really appreciate your opinions. Thanks. x

  19. I miscarriaged at 11w+3days. I started to have a little bit brownish discharge for two days, and then a little bit bleeding on last Sat morning. My first screening was scheduled the next Mon. I was still hoping that everything would be fine. However, in the afternoon, I had more bleeding and cramping pain. In the evening, the pain changed from cramping to contraction. I went to Emergency. Doctor confirmed that I had a miscarriage.
Even though the Doc told me this is a natural process that my body thinks that my baby is not going to develop, so my body said no.
I cannot accept it, though I might appeare to be strong and accepting what she told me at that moment. I went home, cried and cried.
Though I tell myself I can handle this positively, I don’t know when I will get over this.

  20. Hi I just thought I would tell my story so far. We found out we were pregnant a few weeks ago and we were over the moon as I am 39 and have waited so long to be settled and have a baby. Last Friday (thinking I should be about 7 weeks) I had slight pink discharge on tissue when I wiped. Later that afternoon I had a drop of blood in my urine so immediately went to the hospital where they examined me told me I had a very faint positive on pregnancy but that my womb was still closed. I was told to go home and come back in the morning for a scan. I had to have an internal scan which showed a 2 mm sac but it was low. They booked me in for a scan the following week. On the way out I had a massive bleed but again having been checked out by the doctor she said my womb was still intact. I have now been off work all week waiting for my next scan, no cramps and although the blood is less it is still there at least twice when I pee, never anything on a pad overnight. Am sick of waiting now and just want to know that our baby is still alive. Anyone else in the same situation?

  21. I am 10.2 weeks pregnant according to the midwife though i havent had a dating scan and believe i am a week or two less than this. i had very tender breasts and mild nausea from the start, however around 2 weeks ago i noticed my breasts were not so tender but the nausea got quite bad. in the last couple of days the nausea has completely gone but i dont know if that is because i took the midwifes advice and ate little and often, the tenderness is also still absent except for a little soreness of the nipples. Is this normal or could this be a silent miscarriage. i cant do anything till monday and i am so scared i cany even get out of bed right now.

  22. OK, I’m not sure if I am miscarrying or not. my last normal period started on new years, I haven’t had anything since. I took as test on 3/14 and it came up negative. The following Sunday I started to notice a light pink/red and mucus discharge followed by a brownish and light red the next few days. From there it was like a normal period, then it escalated quickly with severe cramps and heavy bleeding and clots. And it’s been like that since the last 4 days. I don’t know what to do, do I need to go to a urgent care now? Wait to see if it stops and then make a OB GYN apt? I’m scared, I’ve had a miscarriage before but it was over 5 years ago and it was nothing like this. I had just found out I was prego with a test, a week later I went for a confirmation/checkup and they had told me there was no heart beat, I lost it and I had to have the D&C. So this is all new to me. Please tell me what I should do.

  23. I’m blessed to have a 6 year old son thanks to fertility treatments, but unfortunately have lost three more babies due miscarriage in the past two years. The most recent one, last July, was a partial molar pregnancy. I made it to 12 weeks, and had no idea that anything was wrong until I went for an ultrasound and was told that development had ceased at 9 weeks, and that there was no heartbeat. I was of course shattered. It wasn’t until weeks later that I was told that it had been a partial molar pregnancy.

After waiting the required time before trying to conceive again, and again with the help of fertility treatments, I’m finally pregnant again – just over 11 weeks. My doctor’s nurse told me this time around that what I had thought was just a stomach virus with the partial molar might actually have been the only sign that something was wrong. I’ve just had another apparent stomach virus yesterday with similar, though less severe symptoms that last time (nausea and cramping – and I’ve never suffered from morning sickness with any of my previous pregnancies). I’m scared that it’s happened again. Scans were done at 9 weeks that didn’t show any sign of this being another molar or partial molar, but after losing 3 babies I’m so worried about this one. My next scan isn’t for almost 2 weeks, and I’m wondering if I should be asking to be seen earlier, or if I’m overreacting. If you happen to have time to read this, and can let me know what you think I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

  24. Hi,

I was just wondering if this is normal. At the moment I’m unsure how far I am as I have not had my first scan yet. I had a blood test which shown my hcg level at 230, they repeated the test a week after and it risen to 2296 confirming I was pregnant. I even took a hpt (clear blue) to make sure and this also came back positive at 2-3 weeks. However I have had no symptoms just my breasts are slightly sore every now and again. I’ve had a bit of brown spotting but I assume this is normal and I’ve missed my next period. I’m just scared incase nothing shows on the scan with me having no symptoms. Can this be a normal thing? Should I be worried?

    Thanks

    Emma

  25. Hi, I have high hcg level 23,000 and low progesterone 7.6. I have two healthy babies and history if a blighted ovum. My doctor saw me two weeks ago and did not suspect pregnancy…now I’m scared its another blighted ovum. What are the chances its just low progesterone at this time and I’m 6 weeks and doctor didn’t notice vs bo?

  26. Hi.
I am confused about what is going on with my body at the moment. I was wondering if you could give me a little bit of advice. I cannot have anymore children after I had my tubes cut and burnt several years ago, and I only have one child currently. I have not had my period in over 2 months and started to get a little worried because I knew once I did get it, it would be twice as bad. four days ago I started to have my usual cramps followed with a little brown discharge. My breasts usually get really sore before my period, but for some reason they were not this time. After that, I noticed some light pink liquid. The cramps got worse and I started to bleed a bright red blood. The next day, I was getting small clotting after using the rest room. I figured that I was passing my unused egg, but I happened to look down and seen a round red clot that was about the size of a quarter and got nervous. Since then its been such bad lower back pain and bad cramping. I have been bleeding somewhat heavier than usual and a lot of little clots are coming out. Does this mean I had a miscarriage or maybe stress caused my period to be prolonged and as a result I experienced some clotting which made my period different?

  27. Just found out im having my 2nd baby only 1-2 week but I have started bleeding no heavy but enough to worry me frist it was just brown now I have clots and getting redder any help as doctors not willing to seeme yet not got aappointment for week

  28. I have been getting randomly really tired for no reason for about a month now. Certain foods also started to make me gag. I was on the pill, but i missed about two days in a row of taking it, and had sex during that time. That was about..three-four weeks ago. So a month. And i was only on the pill for a month. My period was three days late, and my period was light. It has been about 4-5 days after my period, and i am getting what seem to be cramps. The other day i got this sudden pain through my stomach, it lasted for about 5 minutes. That was 3 days ago. I also got another pain through my stomach the day after but not as bad, but i had to stop walking and sit down, i also felt really sick.
Could i be pregnant or having a misscariage..? :( Please respond soon what your opinions..

  29. What is the normar prosidure after having a miscarrige at 6 wewks. How do I take care of mi self I f I don’t have a doc.

  30. Hi. I’m 6 weeks pregnant and today I’ve had pinkish dischard all afternoon with mild cramping. I have felt very well for the past week because I caught a cold that turned into a sinus infection, and I’m taking antibiotics. Dispite not feeling well I still worked out for 40 minutes, which then caused me to feel even worse. I can’t help but think that I must be miscarrying, and that it’s because I pushed too hard in my workouts or because I got sick. Is the pink discharge normal, because a lot of what I’ve read on the Internet indicates that it’s a pretty clear sign that I’m in the beginning process of miscarrying.

  31. I have had 2 miscarriages in the past. One in October 2012 and one in march 2013. I am 9 wks pregnant and paranoid about every twinge. I had an ultrasound at 6 wks and the baby was measuring large. My hcg levels at that time were also a little high making me measure almost a week ahead. For the past 3 days I had a headache that would not go away until the dr called in some stronger medicine for me. Today the headache is gone but 2 cramps this morning that I swear was my uterus contracting. No blood but also I have no symptoms today. At all. Usually I’m starving and pee every 10 minutes. Does this sound like a miscarriage in the making or is it my brain making me crazy?

  32. Thankyou for your kind, sensible words. I may be miscarrying my baby right now and I feel worried and scared but I feel reassured that there is a resource like there for women to turn to while we wait for night to turn into day.

  33. Hi there, I’m 11 weeks. About a week ago I noticed that my symptoms got better – no nausea, boobs less sore, less tired. Yesterday when I went to the toilet and wiped, I noticed I had very light, watery brown discharge with some very slight tissue. I rang my hospital’s helpline and they said that as long as it’s brown, it’s ok. But I read that brown discharge is also an early sign of mc. Is there anything I can do or just wait? My 12 week scan is in 1 week.

    Thank you!

  34. Hi, well I was late for my period by 55 days, which never happens, I’m usually very regular. I had a Tubal 7 years ago. But I decided to take a pregnancy test and came out negative….. but after 55 days late, my period has finally came. on day 7 of my period I had really bad cramps and I had to go to the washroom (I don’t mean to be gross) but then I passed a clot about the size of you hand, I have never had anything like this. I continued to pass these for a couple hours later. I went to my Doctor and he recommended the birth control for me to take 3 right way and then 2 a day for 9 days. Has anyone ever heard of this, because its the first for me. My periods usually only last 5 days max, and I’m on day 8 now and no signs of stopping anytime soon…

  35. Hi I haven’t taken a test yet but I will soon and I am having all the signs of pregnancy. What really worries me is I had some light to medium bleeding when I was supposed to miss my period, but it was nothing like a normal period for me, it was brown and then changed to a dark red. This will be my fourth pregnancy and this hasn’t happened before with any of my others, should i be concerned even if i still have signs of pregnancy now after that?

  36. Hello there!!!

Here are my concerns; I had a complicated pregnancy in March 2013, I ended up having a d&c @ what was supposed to be 17.5 weeks pregnant because the baby stopped growing at 12 weeks. After the d&c, I never passed clots and didn’t bleed very much at all. That was my third complicated pregnancy that ended in a d&c or miscarriage. I also have had a large cyst on my left ovarie since 2005 (found on a internal ultrasound during 1st miscarriage).

I took a pregnancy test on this past Tuesday, I didn’t get my period that was due the 15th so I figured I’d just check in case, truly I didn’t think I was pregnant tho. Anyhow, results came back positive and since then I’ve been eating healthy, trying to drink lots if water, taking my prenatal vitamins etc. Last night, my fiancé & my son and I went bowling (I wasn’t bowling, I was watching), and suddenly I felt a gush of liquid, so I got up and went to the washroom and passed a clot, not too large (maybe half the size of a clementine or less), but I couldn’t really see much of size or color maybe because of shock but it did float to the hole in the toilet quickly and I couldn’t see. I only had a all amount of bleeding while passing the clot and nothing after, very light cramping and some diareha today twice, but I feel fine. Am I miscarrying or is this a chance I passed on excess tissues left over from d&c 8 mths ago? The cyst? I’m very hopeful everything’s going to be fine, I’ve been laying down and taking it slow today. Help me! Advice, support!!! Please & thank you.

  37. Hi this is my 6th pregnancy i have 4 kids 1 m/c i should be about 5 weeks right now . Just found out and figured everything out 5 days ago. when i believe i wiuld have been about 3 weeks the day i was due for my period during rough intercourse i felt a pop followed by 1 gush of bright red blood. theres been no blood since and feel very pregnant should i be worried?

  38. I took two home pregnancy tests that came up positive. A few days later i started bleeding. This is my first pregnancy so i went to the hospital. They did an hcg test that came back 16. The following test put me at at 39 3 days later. The bleeding was light and then got heavier with clotting but not enough too change a pad. It lasted only a few days then stopped. The hospital diagnosed it as spotting complicating early pregnancy. I took at home tests that still come up positive. Today i started getting some cramping and have spotting again. The cramping feels like pressure and is kinda in my lower back. My insurance won’t start for a few weeks… Did i or am i miscarrying? Should i just go back to the er? this anxiety is killing me i can’t think of anything else!

  39. Hi everyone. I just want to share something. Recently i found out i was pregnant on monday, i was told i was pregnant before my period came. Like 3 days later at 4 weeks and 2 days i went to the hospital cause i was bleeding and i was scared. The doctor at the hospital did and ultrasound on me and they saw nothing. He took me a blood test and my hcg levels were at 0. He walked into my room and told me i wasnt pregnant and he thinks im bleeding cause its my menstral cycle. Yet then he tried testing me again for my hcg quantity and it fell to 1<. The doctor from the hospital was confused and he told me to go do an ultrasound and test blood at my regular doctor on the following check up which is 9 days from now but im bleeding(i dont soak a pad throughout the whole day). But everytime i wipe there a medium amount of blood more lighter than usual its my 3 day bleeding. I need some advice

  40. I’m 10 weeks and a day along, I’m 95% sure I just miscarried…. I have had miscarriages in the past but never this far into the pregnancy….. k basically I just had sex with my bf and right after we noticed I was bleeding ( meaning it started during sex) so I went to the bathroom figured it was fine as i had bleed while pregnant with 2 of my three children….well while I was sitting there on the toilet i passed a clot about the size of my palm it was real dark in color and seemed to have a bulge on one side and now I’m bleeding pretty heavy ……got up to change my pad and got real light headed….. at this point I pretty much know I lost the baby but since I know that and my insurance hasn’t kicked in do I really need to go to the ER? Our ERs suck and i dont have the money to go either.

  41. Was to docs ob said cervix is closed nd uturis nd placenta looked good baby was suckin thumb nd doing flips bt im still loosein a lil pinkish stuff nd when I wipe its pinkish orangish im still scared cramping is nothing severe nd passing alot of gas… any ideas??

  43. I right lower back hurts. I’m 6 weeks. It hurts like when you didn’t drink enough water hurt. I am drinking water. could it be signs of a miscarriage?

  44. On Friday i was in town and began bleeding heavy it took me 45 minutes to get home, and in that time i had to change napkins (i didn’t have any pads so i filled 6 napkins in half to make a pad) twice and still bleed through and soaked my jeans. When i got home and took a shower i sat down to pee on the toilet and when ipushed to urinate blood gush from me like I’ve never seen before i estimate about 6-8oz of blood. Then i got into the shower to clean up and more blood, not as much and a clot the size of 2 and half quarters came out after all that i havent bled any but have been pretty sore with mild cramping…….. HELP!

  45. Hi
I am not sure if I am pregnant, about 3 weeks ago I had my period for about 5 days, wasnt heavy just normal. It stopped and now I am having cramp, headaches and feel dizzy and gross after I have eaten dinner, I am passing a browny creamy coloured mucus, it is quite yuck. I was just wondering if this could be a sign of pregnancy or a misccariage?

  46. I hope this is ok I ask this. I’m a bit nervous and uncomfortable saying everything but I’m getting so many different answers and have NO idea, I almost feel crazy because I wish I just knew. Even though I may never know. Ok so about two and a half weeks ago I had intense sharp cramps one night, thought to myself ok this will be a bad month. But by morning they were gone and no period. My period was officially 9 days late before I saw my first spot of pink- and the next two days I literally saw ONE spot if pink, then the next day it got a bit more and the following day heavier for the next four days. Before I started to see those signs I took one test and it was a positive, faint but a sure positive, so I took 5 after that all turned up negative. I had severe cramps and it all felt different then a normal period. Just.. different. And i had small clots nothing big. I’ve had a dr on this app say miscarriage, two actually, and then my normal dr told me it was nothing. I had heard of a curtain cyst causing false positives and thought that must be it but everyone else says no. I had leaned on cyst because my husband had a vasectomy 4 years ago. I know and have seen and heard of pregnancies after. So I’m super confused and wish I knew. I had hoped someone who has been there may have some insight. Tha k you very much.

  47. Oh and to add before I had a low grade fever before I started bleeding but for only one day. Thanks again.
